Steinhausen Quad II Automatic Watch Winder- Power problem?

Post by krushy »

Ive just bought a solution to my expanding watch collection.

Image

I didnt want to spend too much, but needed several winders to keep my autos from stopping (most annoying as you rush out the house), so this Steinhausen Quad II Automatic Watch Winder seemed ideal!!

It was an unused Ebay item (still had all the original packaging in it etc) however the original mains adapter was missing.

I know that its a 6vdc input.
What I dont know is the polarity of the input connector

Anyone any idea what the polarity of the connector is?
ie is the outside bit + or -ve (and therefore the centre bit is opposite -ve or +ve).

I could just try trial or error, but i'm not sure if the winder has reverse polarity protection (I personally never leave home without mine!!)

Any help greatly appreciated

Thank you!

I have no idea what that means but it is a great looking winder! What size is it?

I am sure someone will be along to aid in your polarity doobery etc query shortly :D

normally the inner bit is positive as it protects the charger from shorting out on any earth, and of course it stops you touching it and getting a shock.

You used to be able to get a switchable out put main adaptor from places like argos

I have just found such a beast on amazon for a couple of quid.
I just wanted to check to make sure before the grand turn on!! :D

I suspect it will be mega noisy when its turning and burning...

I've also mailed Steinhausen for the switch settings to put the winders into a particular winding mode (you can do each one separately)

That will come in hand, especially if you have any watches with a 7750 movement in it

It is big but holds a lot of watches and is reasoanbly quiet. Not as quiet as the CWL one but holds more watches.
It is also nice to see your watches on display before choosing one.

Yes. I still have the gold/brown one but I sold the black one to Androo.

I find the biggest difficulty with mine is fitting the watches with bracelets and the typical CW clasp sufficiently tightly around the cushion to stop them flopping about and gererally creating mahem in the middle of the night. Sometimes the Management makes me turn it off! Bits of cardboard to increase the tension often fall out. Watches with the traditional buckle are best as they can be easily tensioned. And another thing! Mine was delivered with a spare motor. After about a year I wish it had had four spare motors!!

I use cheap washing up sponges and cut them into chunks. For the winder that has holders that are quite small I put a bit of sponge in between the watch and the holder to pad it out or use that for watches with NATO straps. On all the winders that take 2 watches per turner I always put a piece of sponge between them so the watches don't bump and create small dinks.

I have found that the winder does not need to be on 24 hours. Some have teh option for 3 hours on and 9 hours off. If you time it right that is overnight. I prefer a timer plug (a few quid from Robert Dyas) and so the winder comes on at 9 am and goes off at 10pm. This gives the watches enough winding and also gives the spring a rest to unwind overnight which I have been told is a good thing. And it is silient all night if it is in the bedroom. :D

I don't see what the problem is. I just put my autos in the tumble dryer and set it on cool so that in the morning they are at the right temperature to wear.
