Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
I agree with Downer. I have read many posts from people over the years when buying a new CWL which may be their first foray into a higher price quality watch and how impressed they are with the whole experience including getting the box and opening it. I can understand people who buy many watches wanting less packaging but for the general public I think it is still a good idea. They did take the size of the box down not that long ago so it weighs under 1Kg which reduces the postage.

Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
If one were to calculate the environmental impact of the packaging, it would be dwarfed by the manufacture of the watch itself plus transport.
Consider the energy and man hours that have gone into the watch, precious metals, synthetic sapphire production, machine hours, etc.
The packaging is probably a fraction of a percent of the watch in terms of energy and man hours.
I think it's delusional to think that reducing the packaging will have much benefit for the environment.
Not buying a luxury watch (or not owning more than one) would be much more significant.

Maybe something could be done to reduce the carbon footprint of the packaging while at the same time keeping it substantial and giving the recipient that special feeling. Using more natural materials might help

Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
I would actually prefer a mahogany box, lined with velvet and the Swan down, highly polished by naked nubile ladies (or men depending on preference) high on a mountainside somewhere exotic.
I think the box offering from CW could be addressed. I see no problem with an eco-option and would encourage it to be standard packaging for the Quartz entry level range. The current faux leatherette affair is a bit long in the tooth now.
But what about for those of use, like downer, who like the sense of occasion from opening the box?
Why not offer some truly different watch boxes?
Pelican cases for the divers? Watch Rolls? The highly polished suggestion above? a cigar type case? The possibilities are endless.
Eco as a choice is good, but as someone mentioned, will offer little by comparison to the impact of producing Stainless Steel and Sapphire.
Give us the choice CW, i think that's a good start!

If the packaging could somehow be eco-friendly, cost effective and durable then sure go for it. However, I have a feeling that the typical wear and tear of time will not be kind to eco-friendly materials. These watches aren't being mass produced and replaced each year, so it is hardly harmful in the grand scheme of things to use the current packaging.

If people keep the boxes for a long time, wood or cardboard boxes are a form of carbon sequestration.
Given that most people seem to keep the box, it should therefore be made of wood and as large as possible.

Yes, that's a good point. My first CW purchase felt very impressive, not least due to the packaging.ianblyth wrote:I agree with Downer. I'm sure that many members can recall when CW experimented by not issuing the cream outer cover to help the Environment.
The brouhaha that followed soon led them to reinstate the outer cover.

I like the sense of occasion, opening up the pack and working through the layers, it makes it special. Yes you end up with boxes but that is a small price to pay.
Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
I've its an option the yes, but i agree that i should not downgrade the experience

Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
If the concern over CW packaging is ostensibly "for the benefit of the environment" then personally there's much bigger fish to fry before we start on luxury items including watches. Yes, you could argue that it's a more general and laudable philosophy, and perhaps a marketing gesture, but in the bigger scheme of things it's no more than that. Belching diesel engines, farting cows and general recycling efforts are a much bigger and easier problem to attack

Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
I'm ok with eco friendly as long as their is still a strong, nice looking, durable, box for me to keep my watch in. also without increasing watch prices. An example for a high priced watch or an additional cost world be a bamboo box.

Re: Should CW Offer Eco-friendly Packaging ?
The option I would like to see is a tough, zipped travel case along the lines of the Omega service case or the Oakley watch vault. This is then perfect for taking your watch anywhere or for that matter returning it. The watch would need to be well protected within the zipped case and there would need to be a small outer box, again well filled with packaging material, that could be disposable. I have the big boxes, but they just sit in the drawer under the bed.
