Should CW introduce a skeleton watch?

No thanks, I only want to tell the time.

Not a full skeleton, but I would love a window on the face to see the escapement.

A nice traditional skeleton with roman numerals.

A modern skeleton design, a bit industrial but functional too.

A full on industrial skeleton. Not subtle but very distinctive.

The only skeltons I have are in my closet.

Should CW introduce a skeleton watch?

Post by chb »

I really fancy a nice skeleton watch. Don't like most of the ones on the market (certainly nothing under £1500).
Should CW branch out into this arena, and if so what should they create? :D

CW hasn’t gotten to Kip’s idea and request for the pocket watch yet though it’s a likely candidate for the future but that doesn’t mean that a skeleton isn’t being considered. None of us accept perhaps Hans and Kip know what will come out next and whatever they know now is likely to be kept a secret until the right time comes along. It takes a lot of planning and tooling up to produce a new design. It also takes making a study of the market place as to what sells, what fads are hot, what likely will the public jump for. Marketing strategy is crucial.

I think I'd need to see an example of a good skeletal watch to decide.
The ones I've come across are either too bling or too tacky (excepting blink can be tacky).
IMHO they're for the wearer to show off whereas they should be there to show the watchmakers artistry.

I like the look of this one because of the integration of the movement and dial.

Nope - don't like them and in the main cannot tell the time on them with my old eyes.

There was a lovely Kemner posted on the forum a while back and it made me look at skeleton watches in a whole new light. Not sure my collection is ready for one yet. There are quite a few other pieces I need to obtain first.

I have voted "NO", but I'd never say never.

I've never seen one I'd buy, so I'd vote 'no'.

There was a discussion a while back about the "worth" of a watch. The argument being, that, as soon as you pay more than £50 or so, it's no longer about telling the time; it's about "something else". We never did define what that "something else" is, but skeleton watches definitely have it. Skeleton watches with tourbillons, even more so. Not an everyday watch, by any means, but a fantastic way to demonstrate the artistry and passion of the true horologist.

I'd definitely be interested (although I'm not holding my breath about the tourbillon!!).

I voted no, the only good ones are very expensive to show off beautiful hand made and decorated movements, who want's to look at a basic ETA or Sellita. :?

One of the nicer ones is the Corum Golden Bridge, still would'nt want it but it looks nice.
No more Quartz (except when I cannot resist).

You're absolutely right. In order to be really interesting, it would genuinely have to be the "cheapest, most expensive watch in the world" On the other hand, that was the idea, wasn't it?

I'm not really a fan. They look too complicated/cluttered and I like simple classic designs in general. I'd never say never.

Before that though, I want to see a CWL with an internal bezel and/or cushion style case, which to me is a classic retro design. Internal bezels look cool 8)

That’s an excellent point to make and the primary reason, I think, why mechanical timepieces of all types have remained strong in the market. What makes skeletons appealing of course is the ability to see the inner workings of a mechanical watch.

Internal bezel? Not sure what that looks like... can you offer a picture of an example?
