Setting Time Back 1 Hour from DST

Post by Leon O »

How do you set your watches back from daylight savings time to standard time. I imagine with quartz you can just wind the time backwards an hour, but that would be a "no no" with an automatic.

I'm assuming the proper method an automatic would be to move the date ahead to the day before the change and then move the time ahead until it reaches standard time.

Thanks

Quartz or auto, I just turn it back one hour.

What is the danger in dong this? I haven’t had issue with it before, so likely will keep on doing it :D

I had the same conversation with Declan about this during a demo when he was moving the hands back and forward. I always move the hands clockwise to change the time - he was OK moving hands anti clockwise. So I guess it's ok!

In some cases the movement will keep better time when passing the desired time and set the hand back. For example, the Dartmouth explicitly states this in the user's manual.

Another example is the 'true GMT'. To change the date you advance and reverse the hour hand through 12.

I think this is a sentiment from the past dealing with non hacking movements that has carried over. Most modern movements it doesn't matter.

The harm comes if on position 2 for adjusting the date when the time is from 8 to 2 but it's fine adjusting the hands if the winder is fully pulled out as far as I'm aware.

I’ve had mechanical date watches for over 35 years and never gave this any thought. Except I do not change the time on any of my watches until well outside of the date change activity.

My 2 quartz watches (C70s) both have independent hour hands. So does the Ulysse Nardin, which I put on on Saturday so that I could have the pleasure of pushing a button (saddo!)

The G-Shock does what it does, and the rest are sitting in the box waiting to be set next time I wear them.

Thanks Fellas,

I'll have to put my G-Shock on the window sill because it is the one watch that gets used every day. 😀

The safest way is this:

From our How To section...
 How do I set or correct the time and date on my watch?
You should always consult the owners manual for your watch but this method will work for most watches.
1. Set watch to 6:00 (no matter am/pm).
2. Set day/date to day before.
3. Turn hands until proper date appears (am) and then proceed to set proper time am or pm.

That said, you can always pull the crown for an hour or simply turn the hands backward an hour as long as the day/date function has not engaged. That varies from maker and movement but is safe between 6 a.m. and p.m.
