Second hand moving while setting time - SW200-1 COSC

Post by maclink »

I just took out my C60 Sealander Elite for wearing a spell. While setting the time, the second hand started moving. When I stopped adjusting, the second hand stopped. When I started adjusting again, the second hand started moving again. So I pushed in the crown, pulled it fully out again and the behaviour stopped. Anything to worry about or just one of those things that I may never see again.

The skinny crown paired with the characteristic resistance when winding the SW200 movement is quite uncomfortable. This type of crown would do tons better with an SW300 movement. :?

One of those things, I feel.

A case of the cogs / gear not being fully engaged / disengaged. Rectified second time around.

I've had this too once. I just pulled the crown again and all was well.

Agreed on the 300 movement to assist the fiddly crown on the Elite. I moved my Colchester on as I found it difficult to wind the watch. A shame, as I really liked the watch and the ingenious pop out crown function.

I keep my sealander elite on a winder :D

On topic, I have experienced what the OP described on several watches from a few different brands. I always put it down to the intricacies of a mechanical watch, and never found any issue related to it.

I thought that this would be of some interest to this thread. This is a good video that explains how the hacking mechanism works. It is basically just a small metal lever (balance stop lever) that presses against the balance wheel stopping it when the crown is pulled.

As an aside, I had a watch with an unusual (to me) fault where when I went to set the watch, the instant I moved the hands the watch would lose hack and the hands would no longer move (the crown still fully pulled). I am not sure what exactly the fault was but you can see where if that lever gets bent in any way then there could be issues. You can also see that if there is some slight slop in the system then there could absolutely be times where moving the crown would move the balance stop lever ever so slightly. Then taking the pressure off the crown brings it back in contact with the balance.
