Photo Of Month Judges

Post by TheBeatles »

I know it’s subjective but who decides on Photo of Month? Is it one person, admins or some sort of vote?

Not since the Feb ‘22 photo have I been impressed with the choice!

There seems to be better photos within “CWL Of The Day” than those chosen.

Again, just my opinion but would be interested in other views.

The answer to your question, Brian, is in Kip's opening post to the Members Photo of the Month thread in the Gallery.
Kip wrote: Thu Jan 19, 2017 3:40 pm Every month we have some wonderful photos of CW watches posted all over the forum. Some are simple wrist shots while some are very creative and composed.

The Admin Team has decided that each month we will select 1 member photo to be featured here.

This Month's Photo has been selected to launch the Member Photo of The Month because Pipesmoker was the winner of the Name the New C1 Collection. He was presented his C1 Grand Malvern Power Reserve at Salon QP in November 2016.

We, The Admin Team, have no secret formula for the selection process and our opinion is purely subjective.

Some months there is a clear winner. Other months our vote is split e.g. this month we had a clear 'runner up' of this one from @tikkathree.

We're happy to listen to alternative ideas for the selection.

Quite simple, Brian. As Kip stated in the introductory post to the thread, it’s something the Admin Team as a whole decides. We bring the team’s attention to photos we have spotted, sometimes one completely stands out and it’s unanimous, other times we discuss and vote. As you say, it’s subjective and there are no hard and fast criteria, though we do try to get a range of different watches, types of shot and contributors.

Sorry you don’t like our recent selections, but please discuss. We are always happy to listen.

EDIT. I see that Guy has posted as well.

Thanks for the quick explanation, chaps.

I didn’t go as far back as 2017 to see Kip’s introductory post.

I don’t post pics myself so can’t be too critical, but some seem pretty ordinary. Apart from, as I mentioned, Feb’22 and for obvious reasons the Ukraine edition.

Looking at some of the other threads about photos, it’s obvious that we have some pretty talented photographers on Forum. Just a pity this doesn’t always apply to watch photos.

But again, so as not to cause offence, these are purely my views.

Well, for my penny's worth, I think the photo chosen is more often than not very good indeed. There's and endless supply of great wrist shots in CWOTD, the forum does indeed have more than its fair share of great photographers. No complaints from me.

As Des said, wrist shots can be great but we do try to mix it up a bit. You wouldn’t want to see nothing but arty, posed or enhanced shots either. Same goes for seeing too much of the same watches. Sometimes it’s nice to show an older or less common watch, and to use photos from a wide range of members.
The chosen photo is also the banner for the Portal page for the next month, so it’s in a public and prominent place on the forum. So while having an Aquitaine up there soon after its launch wasn’t planned, it certainly informed our thinking when a great pool shot appeared, and it was the first opportunity to flag up a new model!
We all liked this month’s chronograph picture. It was well taken and composed, and a bit different.

I would add that we like to share the spotlight as much as possible.

Since the launch of the Photo of the Month we have posted 64 photos by 47 different members.

A slightly deviating question- I hardly ever go to the portal page... Is it possible to see all of the photos of the month, or just the current one?

Just the current one, Lindsey. That’s all you can see on the portal page.

The complete list is visible in a sticky topic in Gallery

We keep that as a locked topic to preserve the integrity of the list and keep it easy to navigate. But as this thread shows, there is no objection to members discussing it.

I think the choice of photographs has been very good, each has been different and certainly have caught my eye.

Just picked this as a thread to use, rather than send a PM

On my mobile the photo of the month is no longer the Bel Canto. It didn't seem to be there for a month, but it may have flashed by. Anyway the picture looks like it's gone back to the October picture.

Am I missing something?

^^^^ Something is awry.

I'd noticed the same, albeit without seeing a Bel Canto (which it should be), and merely thought the photo is slow to be changed over this month.

We'll get it looked into.
