Re: New moon phase watch

Post by Davy Crockett »

I am always interested when a new (CW) watch is teased and preview pics released, trying to think what will it be? will it be one I like? want?

Excited by the preview I waited until I finally saw the new C1 Moonphase and oh.... er.... hmm.... pfff!

Wasn't disappointed but my immediate thought was it doesn't do much for me, certainly won't be saving to add to the stable.

I appreciate the engineering and the manufacture, the looks and the purpose but just not lit my fire.

However, seeing the real photos and reading members thoughts and impressions, I now get it! (never been the sharpest tool in the box) :lol:

I expect that with each surface reflecting and sparkling in different ways there are near infinite ways and looks to this watch, almost each watch being 'unique' for want of a better word.

Still not a watch I'll purchase but one I will enjoy looking at the photos and hope to see in the flesh

Concurring! @Amor Vincit Omnia

The microcosm inside the human mind is so staggeringly vast, and the manner in which it interacts with the limitedly perceived macrocosm around itself is so mind-boggingly complex, that it stupefies any mere mortal.

I am tending to believe that a watch such as this new moonphase (although very accurate in itself) appeals to more philosophically inclined individuals for whom the essence of time, and the interpretation of its passage, can be allowed to blur and blend in order to facilitate other similarly fluid ideas...
But alas, philosophy is not enough. If it were to rule the world, not much would really get accomplished, in my opinion. It also takes the engineer, the healer, the scientist... walking the straight, unwavering line with precision tools such as chronographs with split second tracks, slide rule bezels and tachymeter chapter rings to make our world go 'round.

I can see beauty in well crafted pieces of both extremes, but I do prefer more artistic watches that allow my mind to roam beyond the strict precision of time keeping...

Having read @Greatpotfarm ’s post and seen this latest pic as the moon just begins to wane, I have to say I truly think I could sell up and pack the whole game in and wear this watch forever. Keep gentle track of Earth time and Moon time.

^^^^ Well put Lindsey.

Having finished my chores around the house, I've switched watches back to the Moonphase for the evening.

@tikkathree

I'm not sure but I'm thinking Pete, that you have got your Moon slightly behind time, or I've got mine a day or two ahead. :-k :-k

Either way, taking @Greatpotfarm's philosophical view, does it really matter. :wink: :wink:

Taking the (assumed) privileges of the thread O.P. .... :) time to take stock.
It's not for me. To begin, it's too big for my skinny wrist, and we're done right there. I can live with the size for a chronograph, but not a dress watch.
I've had a (dress) watch without indices in the past and it interested me in line with the philosophical view so well articulated by @Greatpotfarm . But in the end the pause, even though minor, between seeing what the hands indicated and registering what time that was more or less, drove me nuts. An inexpensive watch but it ended up literally in the bin.

For those here that the watch IS for, it's a stunner no doubt. I see the pleasure people are finding with it, and that makes me happy.
What does my head in though is this conundrum: A genuinely minimalist dial that has SO much going on.

You know, I had a heck of a job breaking off just the right amount of moon :lol: :lol: Here's where it started: I had believed that Saturday just gone was the full moon. Then I read on Saturday that Sunday was the full moon and I thought, know what? Let's just see how it goes..... :lol: :lol:

And the photos I've posted here today were taken yesterday: does that help? 8)

Just wondering... for those who have this watch.
When setting the moons position using the crown... is the action continuous (as in setting hands), or is it incremental (as in setting a date)?

I wasn't really hoping to have quite this effect on anyone.. I'm sure it's at least 90% due to the photos!

Enjoying looking at the photos on this thread, certainly the last one above this post by @tikkathree - that's a great capture. I also enjoyed the romantic ponderings of @Greatpotfarm, who gave me pause for thought about more abstract methods of time display. I can see this watch giving a lot of people a lot of pleasure, which is what this thing is all about. Personally, I Still think I prefer a smaller, dressier moon phase with a more abstract interpretation of the moon. But this moon phase is ballsy; it's front and centre. It reminds me of the the nightclub doorman that says, "your name's not down, you're not coming in."

From some of the comments here (and maybe in the other moonphase thread), it seems to me that:
1. many who like dressy watches would prefer it smaller;
2. those who prefer bigger watches don't want such a dressy watch.

:-)
