New CW Sealander Chronograph
Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
And there's been a discussion elsewhere here about words on dials and the absence of the words "quartz" or "automatic" here add to the debate about which it's going to be! Is "hand wound" ever written on the dial of a watch?
EDIT: I'll say it'll automatic/handwound with the belief that CW were going all out for mechanical over quartz.

I love the applied numeral markers, I really wish those would show up in another model at some point (with lume though, like how Longines or Farer do it)

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
Purely speculation at this point but I will wager an educated guess. Mike France has been consistently adamant that the brand has moved on from quartz watches & won’t be doing them in the future. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with a nicely designed quartz model because of the more accessible price & reduced service costs. I would wager this will be a hand wound mechanical movement watch. If one wishes to produce a slimmer chronograph, that would be the most likely way to do it. As for the sub dial layout suggesting a quartz watch, I would remind people that Christopher Ward seems to like a challenge & has already produced several “not normally done” watches. This should be a watch that wears very comfortably since it will be using the Sealander case & very attractive to me with the reverse Panda layout color scheme. I have asked or suggested in the past for a slimmer, more wearable chronograph which is why I never purchased the otherwise great looking “Bumblebee” & “Beast” models. I am thinking that I may have gotten my wish & will eagerly await the release of this one!

Was this meant to be leaked or have the sprung a leak again?

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
To all who think this will be mechanical, take a look at the top right subdial. There’s a 5 at six o’clock, and what looks like a 10 at twelve o’clock. That reeks of a tenth second counter. Running seconds are at 6. That’s identical to the quartz movement in my MoonSwatch, albeit chronometer rated here.
Mike “no more quartz” France strikes again.
Why not do a manual wind chronograph? Farer has been doing those and they are delightful.
I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but the evidence looks clear to me.

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
I know that I’m in the minority but I don’t mind quartz watches; they’re reliable, don’t need to be kept wound and always keep good time. If this is indeed real, and has a beating quartz heart then I won’t be deterred from buying.
Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
^^ I'd be quite happy if this turned out to be quartz and wouldn't be averse to buying it if so as it'd hopefully be in the more affordable cost range and it'd potentially become my every day wear. Rather a quartz than another automatic chronograph that's 15 mm thick with large screw-down pushers as I can't wear them so would have no interest in buying or seeing them. Equally it would be fine as a hand-wind.
For me there's lots to like in the overall design - I like a chronograph even though I don't use the sub-dials, the applied numerals, none of them cut in half, case size (although I'd be ok up to 41mm), pushers not overly large and looks like there's no date (it's too small on a Sealander for my old eyes)
Hopefully there would be a few choices of dial colour ways, panda/evil panda, all black, all white or all silver with dark hands plus at least 1 bold colour.
Bring it on.

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
I've only ever seen quartz chrono's with this 2-6-10 sub dial layout. Also far too thin for an off the shelf chrono movement.

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
As Swiss made does not factor into my purchases at all, it will be interesting to see how this is priced relative to Seiko, Citizen, or even the new $195 Fossil chronographs (pictured below).

I’d much rather have 39mm to 42mm, but I’d also rather have an hour totalizer than 1/10 of a second.

Sharp looking chrono to my eyes. Unfortunately 39 doesn't work for me. And if quartz, no thank you anyway.

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
In passing, a speedmaster is 13mm thick. I'm currently coverting a handwoudf AliX which is showing as 13mm also. The studio underdog which I think has the same movement is showing as 13.6mm. My RW Freelancer (auto) is stated as 13.7mm
Never say never, but under 12mm sounds more like a quartz.
My excellent Rotary 90121 is quartz, and is specified as 12mm thick, and manages to get the subdials slightly lower between the 9 and 10, and 2 and 3. .
On the rotary the 6 o'clock counter whizzes round in tenths of a second, but after 30 seconds that stops and it shows elapsed hours. When you stop the clock, however, it shows the 10th second count until you restart it. It's clever.

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
If it’s an attractively designed quartz chronograph, I would be interested. Mechanical chronographs cost a lot more & are more expensive to service than regular automatics. A slim profile watch that wears comfortably & keeps accurate time checks a few boxes. If it comes in below the US customs, so much the better. Looks like this one will have applied numbers & logo which will give the dial depth. Then add the Sealander lightcatcher case & you have a very nice looking watch if you like chronographs. Would I like to see CW produce a chronograph with a high quality mechanical movement? Sure. But, I know such a watch won’t be cheap. Not all of us are in the market for Bel Cantos or similar price watches.

Re: New CW Sealander Chronograph
If it's a quartz chronograph I imagine there will be some grumbles about CW 'going back on their word' about quartz. I don't think it should bother CW too much. There were grumbles from some when they stopped producing quartz watches as it was seen as turning their backs on their value proposition, and leaving some of their customers behind. There there will be grumbles if they 'go back to quartz' - not for producing a quality low cost chronograph, but for some other irk it'll cause them. Changing the plan?? How dare you change the plan!
