Maybe your Moonphase will arrive by or on your birthday! That would be great if it does!

It should be here tomorrow hopefully - few days ahead of my birthday. Will I be waiting to open it on my birthday?

Course not :problem:

Struggling with the bright sun, but here are a couple with the moonphase adjusted. We have a full moon in two days so I will will adjust then.

It is exactly what I was hoping for, a moonphase watch in an everyday watch format.

If you rotate the moon disc a few clicks to the left / anticlockwise, so it's sitting between the 12 and 11 markers, it'll be in about the correct position for today.

Unless, that is, you are deliberately waiting and will move it to the 12 position to tie in with the fill moon.

It actually moves counter clockwise so that’s essentially what I have done except I will tweak it if necessary in two days on the full moon.

Never mind, I understand what you are saying now. The adjustment moves it counterclockwise but in operation the moon will move clockwise.

The JJ04 movement moonphase disc doesn't 'click' each day - it's on a continuous glide. (This just for anyone who's new to the delights of CW moonphases). It's one thing I love about the watch, and one thing that separates it from most other moonphase watches. For some reason a 'clicky' moonphase disc is something that has put me off other watches in the past. Setting this one is a joy - though best done at full moon or new moon

I wasn't expecting this one to arrive until after this month's full moon so it'll be lovely to set it properly tomorrow for the Worm Moon :D

If I may, a couple of related questions from someone who doesn’t own a moon phase watch.
  • When you set your watch to the full moon, will you be doing so at the exact time stated? If so, how precise is it possible to be?
  • As I’m pretty sure you have owned a clicky moon phase, does it click over at midnight like the date?
  • I’ve read that some of the names for full moons are Native American?
It’s a lovely watch. Enjoy it!

That's perfectly correct, Lindsey.

An important difference amongst Moonphase complications.

So, the click - I think (though I never checked at midnight) that clicky moonphases click over with the date change. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but traditionally the moonphase disc was geared from the date mechanism. The JJ04 movement separates the moonphase function from the date mechanism allowing for a different way of moving the moon across the sky. And that is as technical as I can get

WRT setting the moonphase, I wear my moonphase in conjunction with a moonphase app on my phone. I have no problem with that contradiction  The moonphase app has detailed information. Here's a screenshot taken right now (there's a bit more information off the bottom of the screen but you get the drift)
IMG_6472.jpeg

When I first owned a Moonglow I referred back and forward between watch and app often. As you and others have pointed out before the traditional moonphase aperture doesn't show you the 'actual' shape of the moon as it waxes and wanes. But by referring to the app through the cycle I now have a minds eye picture of what the moon looks like as I'm following it on my watch. Now I refer to the app less but can still use it to set the moonphase accurately on the full moon

And naming the moons? This month's moon is (most traditionally) labelled the Worm Moon - named by Native Americans as the last of the winter full moons, and so called because the rising temperatures at this time of year allow the ground to thaw and worms to start making visible casts. It's a whole other worm hole to be explored because so many other traditional cultures have named their full moons in different ways. In Celtic culture this month's moon is the Seed Moon. I love the Celtic name for January's full moon - the Quiet Moon (in Native American culture it's the Wolf Moon)

@missF
Thank you, that is so helpful and informative. Exactly the information I was looking for. I must explore these names for full moons a little more closely. I knew about Harvest and Hunter’s but I wasn’t sure where the various other names came from. :D
