New Arrival C8 Quarz Flyer 44mm
I recently took my C8 Mk 1 for an outing and decided that another Pilot watch wouldn’t go amiss. I liked the look of the new C8 Flyer and thought it might fit the bill so decided to use me voucher and go for it. I went for a C8 Flyer 44mm PVD quartz. As I used to work at Farnborough I was also attracted by the motif of the Farnborough wind tunnel on the back of the case. I went for the quartz as I fancied a pick and go watch for everyday wear. Anyway it arrived a couple of days ago. First impression were very positive. First thing I noticed was that it appears smaller than the 44mm quoted when compared to my C8 Mk 1. This is probably due to the PVD finish whereas my C8 Mk 1 has a steel case.
The face is very balanced and neat in my view. I can detect the Smith Mk2A cockpit clock accents in the relative size of the numbers but fortunately the watch is much more attractive than the original. The hands are similar to the C60 but more slender The result is that the time is very easy to read and the red seconds hand give a nice contrast. Also CWL has listened and the date has a black background. The crown is large and similar to the original C8. This is entirely characteristic of a pilot watch and I like it. I found it had a tendency to dig into my wrist on the original but didn’t notice it on this watch. The PVD finish was good but time will tell how hard wearing it is. I chose the darker of the leather straps. The strap is very thick but quite supple and I find it comfortable to wear. The strap has a normal buckle not a deployment type. Not sure if I entirely like the stitching but it is growing on me.
To conclude I really like this watch and it has a kind of vintage look. My only disappointment is the representation of wind tunnel on the reverse. In their promotion literature CWL said that they went through lots of designs to get the balance and depth of the perforations right. However, the depth of the engraving on the quartz is not as deep and well defined as it appears to be on the mechanical version. This gives it a very flat appearance. Not sure if this is a consequence of having a quartz movement or a deliberate design choice.

I do like the look of that.
And I didn't like it when they were first shown. The sign of good photos.

Trying not to buy any more watches...

Very nice photos.
The website shows a distinct case back difference between the quartz and automatic. Not sure why, but it is obviously by design.

So much better looking than the website pics indicate. Very nice indeed.

Looking at the photos again the face is darker then it appears in the photo. The numerals are a light khaki colour(?) . They look almost white in the photos hence my comment about a vintage look. I like it a lot. Thanks for comments.

Looks great. I've been considering getting the same watch in the automatic version.

I haven't checked yet. I'll report back. At my age if it's dark I'm asleep!

Agreed! I really particularly like the red seconds hand even though I didn't initially for some reason.Clach77 wrote:I do like the look of that.

I've checked the lume which looks good to me. The hands and numbers could be easily read. Unfortunately I have not mastered the art of photographing the lume. However, Lume is not an important factor on a watch for me so I might not be the best judge.
