Years ago when working at a local garage as a weekend/holiday job one of the senior mechanics explained this to me in a sage like manner.

"Cars", he said, "are just like women. When they behave well they are beautiful, elegant, sexy even. But when they play up they can be real bitches. That my boy is why we refer to cars as 'she'".
