UPDATE: My 10yo C8 has stopped working

Post by RichM »

Worked perfectly yesterday and was stopped this morning when I went to put it on. It's never gone wrong... until now. Back to CW it goes for a repair. (Actually, thinking about it, it's nearer 12 years old!)

Just stopped? Just like that!? Oh no! I've got several aging auto watches that are still going strong without a service. I didn't realise they just stopped. I assumed you'd get some warning with other issues.

This watch is a beauty by the way! Not one I've seen before.

Thank you. And yes, it was ticking away perfectly when I took it off just before bed and it stopped at 12.15am (and 32 seconds). It had always kept great time so I'm surprised and it wouldn't restart after a few winds of the crown. Indeed, I'm hoping a routine service will get it back on time 🤞

Here's to a swift turnaround from CW - that Mark 1 is the nicest option of the three available !

Thank you, I hope so too. I'd hate for it to be considered a write off but I'm assuming/hoping it will be a fairly straightforward repair.

If it's a watch you love and it's worth the cost to you getting it fixed, I hope you do so!

That's very true.. frankly I'd pay whatever it takes to get it running again. And if it goes for another 12 years I'd consider that money well spent 🙌

Has it been serviced previously? I have an 8-year old C8 that hasn't yet been serviced and I've been thinking that it's time to take the plunge rather than wait for anything to happen, so it would be interesting to know if yours managed to go 12 years without a service before anything happened.

Nope, never been serviced!! I mean I know the debates and arguments around servicing but until now, my C8 has never shown signs of strain. It's always performed exactly the same rate (-7 secs a day) ever since I've had it.

I can't remember if it's an ETA or Selitta movement in it but I think they are meant to be an easy service.

I think the problem is that you can't really tell from time-keeping alone what signs of strain a watch is under from not being serviced. You only really find out when something more cataclysmic happens, like it stopping completely.

A service should sort yours out though. I think I will book mine in for one too - it's already 4 years overdue.

Yep, I think mine was definitely due a service before now! Fingers crossed it will be running again soon.

Don't sweat it. At the worst a whole Sellita 200 from Cousins is £120, all will turn out well.
