Using the C1 Moonphase as a base model there was a choice of 40mm and 37mm.

And maybe someone only had a small diameter coin to hand and wondered which model would work best for stylish and trendy people of all wrist sizes?
I did wonder yesterday whether the artwork might work better in one size over the other.

And that would have been at a time when that watch would likely be the primary, if not only, means by which the wearer could reliably tell time. Bringing actual jeopardy to the mystery.

The more I look at this the more appreciation I have for it. It's not a sober, traditional watch; and it's not there to cater to those sensibilities. It's for a certain typeof buyer, of which I'm sure 300 will quickly be found. I'm curious about how the time telling birds work. Are they each applied to a separate rotating disc or are they apples to some sort of clear arm that rotates from the cannon pinion?

I think they were usually on a clear Perspex disc with the pointing element (dot, sun, star, arrow, bird?) printed, painted or applied thereon.

^^^^ Looking at this pic from CW's website, Des, I'll advocate clear disc.

Yes, MJW often print the "time telling" elements onto clear discs. They sometimes also print on the revers of the crystal too, but I don't think this is the case here. Either way, what you get is a three-dimensional appearance when viewed at a slight angle.

I think it's a lovely watch. I've previously referred to these as "novelty" watches which sounds a bit unkind on reflection. Really they are fun watches (does that sound better? I'm not so sure  ) At this price point, they are more than I would currently spend, but if I won the lottery I would buy one in a heartbeat.

There's a video clip (20 mins) on the MJW website.

The birds are printed onto clear discs. The artwork is both on the dial and the underside of the crystal as well. Parts of the crystal had to be hand painted due to the shape not being accessible to the pad printers used. I believe there's also hand applied silver leaf as part of the design on the crystal too.

The mystery dial thing is what MJW does a lot of, so this watch really is a true collab with CW's movement/JJ04 and case, plus MJW's cute artwork and the mystery dials in place of hands. It's not just artwork from MJW.

And I believe a lot of MJW's watches are 36mm, including my Number Cruncher.

If they do this in 40mm I’ll be sorely tempted….

HAYQ wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 4:09 pmWhen you buy a Mr.J watch, you're buying it for the dial. Either you like the quirky, artsy-fartsy aesthetic, or you don’t. And let’s be real—this isn’t an everyday watch. Most people get it for the fun factor, like a cool magic trick on your wrist. So why pay £2K when you can get essentially the same thing for £200-£500
I'd be disappointed if it came free as a Christmas Cracker toy! :D

And it’s officially sold out! WOW.

I guess anything with the right name on it will sell—and CW has officially reached that level. They’ve truly outgrown the microbrand/independent/affordable label and are cementing themselves as a major player in the British watch scene. Congrats to them!

I’m glad to own the Bel Canto, but I’m won't buy any new release just because a brand’s name is on the dial. Now, I’m much more excited to see what their upcoming release will be—the one that’s supposed to make a huge splash like the BC did. I hope it lives up to the hype.

Also looking forward to what Echo/Neutra has in store for the Rivanera’s successor this fall!

Well congratulations again to CWL and also to MJW for selling this out so quickly. I have to admit to being a little surprised given the price point for such a quirky watch (without wishing to get into the art/novelty debate) and the feedback I’ve seen along the same lines. But it looks like another resounding success!

It's maybe worth mentioning, as I don't believe it has so far, that the C1 Celestial attracted just a £200 price premium over the mechanically similar C1 Moonphase, for the MrJones Watches dial and artwork.

Objectively that's pretty fair.
