If I may may two points on this, Des.

1. Yes, CW was an early adopter of the purely online marketplace, and the first watch brand to do so.

2. CW did not 'create a space, to run independently,. . .'. The CW forum was set up independently without CW's knowledge, as recorded in the timeline on the [url=

Almost the first online only watch brand. Perhaps the 2nd, unless any other brands started an online only sales model after 1996 and before CW started.

strapline wrote: Tue Apr 15, 2025 11:47 am @Bix It's nice to see new people joining the forum and airing their voices. I think forums offer a very different experience to social media, certainly when they concern a targeted interest, in this case watches. I don't really use social media these days; must have dropped out of FB at least seven years ago, it was still called FB then. I used to love Instagram when it was purely a photo sharing site, but now it has mutated in to something dreadful. All of these spaces have become monetised, they're like the flashing fruit machine in the pub corner. They are there to steal your attention and cash.

The forum is a respectful place whereby you can engage with like minded people. It's totally libertarian and not in the least brand agnostic. The larger part of the conversation that goes on round here probably has little to do with CW or their watches, yet no one tried to impose restrictions on what can or cannot be discussed. Not only were CW one of the earliest adopters of the purely online marketplace, but I can't think of any other watch brand that created a space, to run independently, where their watches, and everyone else's can be discussed ad infinitum.

Edit: When I'm not sure about how a post might be taken; might someone take offence to what I'm saying, can what I'm trying to get across be misconstrued, I tend to save my post to drafts and come back to it later. I tend to post early in the morning and it's easy to jump out the blocks without putting your brain in gear.

Des
@strapline You are spot on with your assessment of social media these days and I love the flashing fruit machine analogy! Like you I really enjoyed instagram in the early days, now it’s probably the most fake place on the internet in my opinion.

You also touch on a good point about forum’s being much more respectful places, social media seems to bring out the worst in some people. The amount of times I’ve seen a perfectly innocent post turn into name calling and general nasty behaviour seemingly out of nowhere. Whether it’s people venting what they can’t in real life I don’t know, but I’d like to think most of them aren’t nearly as nasty in the real world.

Apparently there’s a vicious rumour circulating that some of them do not have beards or wear Panamas.
I think I started a thread on this, but it didn't gain much traction, but you can see some of us have heads, arms legs and everything.
It's weird just looking at wrist shots isn't it ?

I call the vast world of social media platforms the Righteousphere  The platforms offer you a space where you can feel righteous in whatever opinions you're posting, because you can get instant amplification or validation, and because no time is allowed for receiving or thinking about the opinions of other people. There's also no time to really formulate what you think about something or another - certainly no time to go and do some reading about an issue before the 'conversation' has moved on. There's barely time to slot yourself into one or other extreme side of whatever the debate is, before you're whisked along to something else.

This is why certain easy-to-reach opinions get repeated like memes, perpetuated by people coming later who think that they're reading truth:

CW logos are **** (that one took years to recover from  )
Date windows should be matching colours above a certain price point
In-house movements are best
Rolex is for ****ers
Rolex watches are supreme
Women don't want mechanical movements in their watches....

There's so many of these in watchie world I could be here all day

A very wise woman said to me once that life should be more about living with 'both and' rather than 'either or.' I wonder if she was really talking about Rolex??

Just because Rolex is for walkers, it doesn’t mean that those with other hobbies can’t also enjoy them.

Just read this thinking that’s a lot. Over ten years (or 3,650 days excluding leap years) that is 273 posts per day, every single day. Wowser!

When you go on holiday for a couple of weeks, you have to catch up with 3,822 posts the next day on top of the 273 normal posts, just to keep the stats up.

. . . except, as mentioned earlier, the CW Forum has been around for coming up, in December '25, 20 years.

You need to halve your numbers. It's still a lot though.
