@Bix It's nice to see new people joining the forum and airing their voices. I think forums offer a very different experience to social media, certainly when they concern a targeted interest, in this case watches. I don't really use social media these days; must have dropped out of FB at least seven years ago, it was still called FB then. I used to love Instagram when it was purely a photo sharing site, but now it has mutated in to something dreadful. All of these spaces have become monetised, they're like the flashing fruit machine in the pub corner. They are there to steal your attention and cash.

The forum is a respectful place whereby you can engage with like minded people. It's totally libertarian and not in the least brand agnostic. The larger part of the conversation that goes on round here probably has little to do with CW or their watches, yet no one tried to impose restrictions on what can or cannot be discussed. Not only were CW one of the earliest adopters of the purely online marketplace, but I can't think of any other watch brand that created a space, to run independently, where their watches, and everyone else's can be discussed ad infinitum.

Edit: When I'm not sure about how a post might be taken; might someone take offence to what I'm saying, can what I'm trying to get across be misconstrued, I tend to save my post to drafts and come back to it later. I tend to post early in the morning and it's easy to jump out the blocks without putting your brain in gear.

This thread was started on Sunday and is still getting new comments. On Facebook the chat would have died away and it would have been forgotten about by now. Unless you had been online over the few hours it was active then you would have missed this.

It’s the longevity of discussions that help the forum as people can engage over time and respond as they like. This leads to more considered responses and a better depth of discussion.

I look at the forum daily (that's normal, right?) and always enjoy the discussions whilst contributing to some and "liking" more.

I think it is as well, between caring for the kids or sneaking it in on my work break. The forum provides a serotonin booster.

To what extent does the manner in which you present yourself in the forum accurately reflect who you are in real life?

In a world of carefully curated social media accounts, this is a relevant question. I mostly think about this question in regards to myself - am I holding anything back? I certainly was when I first joined. Am I pretending to be something I’m not? Definitely not.

I think if one were to meet me in person, one would find Drew IRL is not so different from forum Drew, other than being a little older, grayer, and heavier than my forum pic (the image on the left, that is!)

And for the record, there’s no judgement to be read into the question. I understand anyone who wants to maintain separation between real life and online, and thus curates one’s online presence accordingly.

According to others I'm quite calm and easy to talk to.. I still have moments that trigger me. I hate conflict and normally try to sway conversation around to prevent any uproar.
On the forum I don't mind a bit of a conflict. But will never be rude to a person. I just find it healthy. In a similar way how my wife and I discuss topics that cause us to have differing opinions. It allows for perspectives other than your own to be understood.

1. Yes, CW was an early adopter of the purely online marketplace, and the first watch brand to do so.

That's an interesting thought, Drew. I think some of us divulge a lot more about our 'wider' selves than others. Clearly a great many on here, including myself, like to maintain a degree of anonymity. In this internet age you can't be too careful, can you? I find it helpful to read between the lines to get an idea of what someone 'might' be like IRL. That said I'm often curious as to what certain forum members might look like. I've taken it as a given that the majority of people on here will never be anything other than a wrist with an opinion.

This is a really good point, so much of what’s online these days is algorithm or engagement based and some great information or discussions get lost to the internet ether purely because they didn’t tick the right keywords or criteria.

Great question this, I’d like to think my online presence represents who I actually am in real life. I’ve never quite understood the curated online presence for personal accounts, for business or marketing accounts it makes sense and I don’t really have a problem with it. But I actually feel sorry for the people that present one version of themselves online, but in reality lead a completely different life.
