So, most of the people who have responded so far have been the 'regulars' .... we all have our favourite drinks and favourite ways of doing things

I'd be interested to hear what newbies and lurkers think about the forum? It's daunting joining in on a board like this. it took me a few years actually to stop from being overawed by the senior forum gods and my lack of knowledge about anything, and start finding my feet and joining the conversations...

It's hard to think of a more appropriate post, or erudite Forum Member, to make that one millionth post today.

As to your analogy of the Forum being like the local pub, with it's casual visitors and long term regulars. Again most apt. Thank you.

Guy
I can't say it better than Guy. I will add that I noticed a couple weeks ago that we were getting close and wondered who might make the momentous post. I couldn't be happier that it is you!

You have added so much to this forum over your 11 years here and I suspect you have more friends here than you will ever realize. Congratulations!!

All I can say is - I'm relieved that at 6.30 Sunday am before the coffee had started to work it was a wrist shot of a full moon Moonglow that I posted. Imagine the deflation if the millionth forum post turned out to be me posting Three Words about the darts, or a one word reply 'stunning' to the previous wrist shot?

One last thought since I mentioned the 'General Disgruntlement' section earlier. It's good for General Disgruntlement to be aired. I didn't set out to start a thread that's just about how lovely the forum is. But again - one of the positive things about the forum is that disgruntlement gets discussed - and usually pretty civilly. It's good to keep CW on their toes - we all buy a lot of watches from them

One million posts, I was not aware we were approaching that landmark.

I must admit that here is about the only place I regularly comment these days. Facebook is useful for some things but having meaningful conversations isn’t one of them and I’m more of a lurker on all the watch groups I joined.

I have never signed up for many other forms of social media, so instagram, Twitter, etc have all passed me by. However MySpace was useful when I played in a band as a way to share music.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Lindsey, I think you’ve captured what makes the forum unique. Sadly forums these days tend to be dying out, I used to visit others once upon a time but slowly they all seemed to grind to a halt as people drifted away.

There are certainly less regulars here than there used to be. Threads often stretched to several pages whereas now they tend to wind up sooner. I think the two millionth post will take longer to reach than the first. However I hope this place continues to survive in our little corner of the internet.

I’m happy here talking rubbish, making bad jokes, but learning a thing or two along the way from those more knowledgeable. I’ve even met a few members face to face and shared more than a virtual pint. And on the positive side while I’ve been here, no one’s told me yet that I’m drunk and need to go home.

^^^^ I think there maybe are less regulars around at the moment, but I definitely think there are more newbies stepping in the door and at a faster rate. I also think that it's quite a step to take between coming through the door taking a look around, and at some point pulling up a chair and joining whatever chat in whatever corner of the bar. Us regulars need to remember that and include others in the chat.

Although I’m still a member of CWE I never post there now and I have ceased to follow it.

I noticed on Facebook among my friends, however, that they are more likely to like or react to something I post that has nice pictures in it, so I rarely write anything meaningful.

I have mixed feelings about the Thank Button on the forum, though it does help to save us to some extent from the dreaded “Quote and plus one”. Overused, it becomes little better than a punctuation mark that says “seen it”, so I am trying to restrict it these days to posts I’ve enjoyed reading, or those which make a good point or have standout pictures.

I’ve always been a useless thanker. :escape:

I can only echo the sentiments above that it was serendipitous for you to have been the poster of the millionth post on the forum @missF, and your first post is as enjoyable and insightful as always.

With less than a year here and a paltry 849 posts (including this one), I still count myself as a 'newbie'. But I think I have certainly 'pulled up a chair' and have never felt anything other than welcomed on the forum, including the ability to ask dumb questions without judgement. As has been mentioned, it is rare on the internet these days that so much conversation can go by without (too much) argument or derogatory comment. For the forum being such a welcoming and tolerant place, credit must also go to the administration and admin team for maintaining this space for almost 20 years now.

I have read a but a fraction of the forum's history. But I have read some of the stories shared of joy and sadness, including some of those about forum members who sadly passed on. Maybe it's strange to feel emotion for internet forum members who I haven't (yet) met, or perhaps never will, but I did. And it's proof of the sense of community that this forum engenders that such tales can be discussed with such care and understanding. This isn't just a Christopher Ward watch forum, nor even a general watch discussion forum, but a community of simply nice people (with some of the worst puns known to mankind).

Anyway, with words I tend to ramble but with numbers I'm a bit better. If I've done this maths correctly:

1. A million posts over 16,779 members means an average of just under 60 posts per member (I haven't excluded those who have never posted)
2. Members who have posted over 10,000 times number 14
3. Those 14 members have contributed over 296k of the forum posts, meaning around 30% of the forum posts have been submitted by the most dedicated 'regulars'
4. 163 members, or just around 1% of the total, have posted over 1,000 times each
5. The million posts have taken 7,063 days, at an average of around 142 posts a day on the forum

As to my drink? Based on my most recent SOTC I reckon I'm taking one shot from every bottle behind the bar...

That bit is really important :-k

The numbers you set out are interesting. It's not beholden to anyone joining the forum to post a lot, and everyone's different in how much of a toe they dip in. I guess my only hope is that newbies who do want to join in manage to join in. It's a pretty friendly place.
(And your puns are some of the worst / best) .... :D
