Magnified Date window?

Post by Topcat30093 »

Probably been asked?
But do you think that CW would consider designing a watch that has a magnified date window?
For those of us who like to have a date on a watch, but have difficulty in reading it.

Someone was selling a C65 Pepsi on Ebay UK a few months back with a DIY magnified date window...looked absolutely horrendous.
I personally don't think they will make one due to people saying they're copying a rather famous Swiss brand or certainly making cross references to it 🤷‍♂️

My Davidoff velocity seems to have a little bubble over the date underneath the crystal. I can't make my mind up whether it's really a magnifier or not, but I think it is. You can see it in this picture, and the date is quite legible.

Not a great pic, but I bought a Trident second hand with a date magnifying lens added. It was done by a jeweler for the first owner. Your local watchmaker/jeweler can do the job or you can DIY pretty easily. It’s also kinda easy to get it messy with too much adhesive so take it easy if you tackle the job.

As for CW offering a date magnifier, I doubt that is something we should expect of them.

I can’t say that it would either have me reaching for the wallet or running for the hills. My MeisterSinger Metris has one but as I rarely look at the date it’s not a key feature.

@JAFO Looking at your Davidoff, my Ulysse Nardin has a similar feature, not over the date but over the “Home Time” window at 9.00.

IMO, CW will never adopt a cyclops on any of their watches (a theme I fully embrace). The R company has that bailiwick locked up !

And I can fully appreciate that.
If I am honest with myself, I guessed that maybe the reason.
What about an OVERSIZED Date?

Firstly I apologise in advance for the multiple posts, but I am not sure how to link posts all together in one reply.

Didn't know you could get such accessories.
IMO, it looks the perfect answer for me.
And I certainly wouldn't attempt to do it myself, because of your comment regarding the delicate nature of fitting it LOL
The only issue I have is there now very few genuine watch repairers in my part of the South west of England.

@Topcat30093

You could always look out for a C9 Harrison Big Day-Date. Details in the CWArchive.

PS> No; I don't think CW will be willing to go the 'magnifier' route.

Whilst I understand that Rolex invented it, they don’t seem to have any exclusive legal (as opposed to moral) rights to it. I don’t have any objection if people want it. I can think of things I like less on watches.

A propos, I keep reading about a “famous Swiss brand”, the “R” company, the “Crown” and various other euphemisms. Has Rolex suddenly become a quasi-religious name that must not be uttered in the mouthings of the unsanctified? It’s a watch brand, folks.

They are like the Voldemort of watch makers and should not be mentioned by name. Surely a man of your learning should know this?

My Panerai Luminor Marina also has the magnifying blob underneath the Crystal I find it a more elegant solution for a blob, but frankly would be happier without it.

When I bought my Rolex Submariner,I chose to go for the no date version which was a few hundred pounds cheaper than the blob date....I would have willingly paid a few hundred more for the non blob.

I think I bought it in about 2011/2 and even managed to get a few hundred pounds discount....how times change.

I think we know better than to say "never" with CW (quartz watches anyone?), but it does seem unlikely if they haven't done so over the last 20 years. Personally I'd rather not have a date at all, but if there is one then I like to be able to see it.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left
