Loupe specific post

Post by gatehealing »

Just got mine in Austin Tx. I've typically made efforts to protect my CW magazines, and proudly had them on my coffee table at home, and in my waiting room. The glossy paper spoke to quality, and because I cared for them, it elevated the brand a bit more in my mind.

This new Loupe is already a coaster. It just exudes "saving money" instead of "we are proud of our company and that's reflected in this magazine."

The pictures look fuzzy bc of the paper. The photo of The owners on pg 24 looks like Mike is not happy with whatever he's holding, Chris is picking at his nose, hunched over, seemingly disinterested, and the 3rd fellow ((Peter?) seems almost dejected with what he's looking at.

The Urban Wild Man is clearly aimed at hipsters, which is fine, but this is another example of where this idea of marketing to hipsters is coming from. It's not subtle; it's ok, their money spends the same.

Terms like "Dig the new breed" seemed a bit out of place. This goes with other wording issues expressed on other threads.

Overall, I give the Loupe a C-. Having read more about the re-brand, especially the logo, I'm happy to see the meaning and connection, but still think it's a no-go in my opinion.

Completely agreed regarding the choice of paper. All images and fonts are fuzzy. This type of paper go well is illustration, not photographs of highly detailed jewellery.

'Uncoated stock' (rough paper) is favoured by the Mac using designer types because it is different.

Like a lot if this design stuff, I think they feel the need to come up with something new to justify their existence.

It doesn't occur to them that things have probably been done the same way in the past because people prefer it.

Completely disagree about the paper.

Texture feels good and, most notably, its much easier to read in bright light as it does not suffer from reflections that you get with glossy paper.

Quality of pictures e.g. watches is fine too.

PS> I'm not a designer and I don't own a Mac (or any other Apple device).

I disagree about the paper too. IMO the new magazine feels much better than the old. Not so keen on the actual content though

No issues from me with Loupe.

These types of magazines are normally one of two styles.

The stunning catalogues that have cost a fortune to produce such as the Lange one, or the more funky lifestyle/GQ type ones such as the Omega one that they charge you a fair whack for.

This leans towards the latter. Paper stock, content and quality are actually bloody good for a free mag.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the old one, and the enjoyment was continued with the new one!

Yep, I don't think the new mag is a big departure from the old in terms of content. I wouldn't gush over the old one but it was ok, so my opinions/feelings about the new one are the same.

Paper - no problems with it, and I'm completely non-Apple and am totally not a design type of person.

My issue remains whether the left-aligned logo in a very bland font is what is best for CW watches going forward, and worse if they are going to force the logo - thereby limiting dial designs - to always be at 9 o'clock.

The glare issue with glossy paper is a good point. I've seen other mags with the loupe stock--just felt cheaper to me, but other big companies have used it, so it can't be all bad!

I prefer the glossy paper more but beyond that it does not bother...content is where it matters. If CW has to cut costs then it rather be on a free mag than on the watches.!

Received my physical copy on Thursday (read the online version when it came out). Seems fine to me. I personally like the paper choice. It looks nice.

I wouldn't mind a large print version, actually!
