Loupe: Release 2025: Drawing Board

Post by navidsonrecord »

Not sure if others have already posted about this, but in the current Loupe there's a teaser for the next experimental CW design. "This is not Bel Canto 2, but it's a spiritual successor... the watch will place the balance wheel in a far more prominent position than usual, and this won't just be an ordinary balance wheel... [it] is such an integral part of the watch's design and functionality. It's going to be a thing of beauty... There are hints that it will be the most advanced watch the company has ever made".

The Bel Canto itself gave MB&F design vibes... is this CW's push to make a Legacy Machine 101 for the rest of us? Or am I overthinking?

It could be. It also put an emphasis on the free sprung balance which would indicate that this will be on display in some fashion.

On a kind of related subject, I didn't receive the Last Loupe magazine but have previous ones.

I don't recall requesting a copy each time, but wonder if I need to to get a copy. Any thoughts?

They stopped sending my copies of Loupe a few times and I keep having to request them. Don’t know why that happens, it’s quite annoying.

Are we possibly gonna see a tourbillon from CW? If so that would make me shell our some change...

Quite a wad of change, one would imagine. It’s certainly not something they have ever hinted at in the past. Listen to some people and it’s the thing every watchmaker wants to do; bit of a show pony complication, if you ask me.

I'm definitely in agreement that it's a boastful complication without any real use, albeit except to flex technical engineering ability; But as someone without a need for anything other than a date window I find it a bit fascinating.

I was also thinking they might make another play at a more advanced skeleton movement. Personally I find skeletonized movements to be in the category of show pony as well 😅😅

That being said I don't have a long standing history with CW, and have only really begun to learn/explore Horology. I haven't even received my Trident Bronze yet and I'm already searching for mechanical wall clocks....so much to learn

^^^ I don't think it is a tourbillon. I remember an interview with Mike France a while back stating that the tourbillon wasn't that exciting because it was a well understood and documented complication and therefore not that difficult to do. I think the OP is probably closer as a watch like that would allow CW to showcase more of their prowess at finishing which they have invested in heavily recently.

Regarding Loupe, I didn’t get the previous one, but did get this one. Seems a bit hit and miss, as I have requested it a few times. But didn’t do anything previous to receiving the latest one!

Interesting. Obviously, plenty of people are attracted to them. I didn’t find any of the recent halo models (polite term) or show ponies (not quite so polite) remotely attractive. At least, not the recent fully skeletonised watches or the earlier Apex models that were semi skeletonised. Avoiding them was an easy decision.

I prefer a nice slim watch with an attractive dial and good, clear, legible and unequivocal time display. They don’t seem to be going that way with the halo models on the whole.

A tourbillon is quite likely and a natural progression for CW.

I would like to see another floating balance wheel design, like MB&F, CKL Watches, Ketelaars & ...
