Leather vs alligator strap?

Can someone please enlighten me as to the benefits of an alligator strap vs leather?

I don't know if there is a practical benefit, but for me alligator just looks better then normal leather.

I prefer a texture or some sort of accent (like colored stitching) to add interest. I also prefer matte instead of shiny to subdue it a bit. For me, a wide grained alligator is perfect.
