Re: Learn from my mistakes?
i only wore it once and not for long, but the backwards buckle on the BB strap annoyed me. it's a beautiful piece of leather and a nice buckle, but why did they have to make it backwards?
the "g" is for Greg...
Re: Learn from my mistakes?
Great sets of recommendations.
With over 30 watches, I'm sort of guilty of more is more, so I need to do something about that, but equally I have quite a lot of 'affordable' watches (sub £300), many vintage, so I reckon I'm not too far out of pocket.
I'd certainly agree with "avoid the herd clamour" and "buy what you like". Trouble is, I like too much!
Great thread (which I was led to by the 'Thread of the Year" posting).

A great set of rules to try and collect buy.
When i first started collecting i promised myself i would only try and buy watches i like and would ware. So far i'm doing OK everything gets warn in my collection admitted some more than others.
On the rules no 3 has not been an issue yet, The Solo ( which i love )and Tudors have been out of my price range while the mako and alpinest have not appealed.
On rule 8. Apart from the Tutima i have bought all my watch's online having only seen pics. Probably i have been lucky as i like what Ive bought, some times its taken i while to find the right strap fit combo but over all very happy. My luck will probably run out soon, as im getting more picky the more i look around and spend time on here but now i have a better understanding of what i like and don't like. It makes the hunt for the right watch at a price i can afford and fits my brief harder but when i do finally pull the trigger i now it will be right for me.

Re: Learn from my mistakes?
Just seen this, and its a fantastic post for someone like me who has an interest in nice watches, and one I would like to grow and develop into a small but well thought out collection.
It's all too easy to get carried away and this is a nice guide to taper me back down to earth with it!
Thanks for the effort.

The watch-collecting journey - everyone has a different path, and likes and dislikes - but it is a journey all the same...my journey has been through many phases, and I have learned a few lessons. In the spirit of learning from others' mistakes, maybe it will help if I try to document mine:
1. More is not more.
2. Do not buy solely on price.
3. Watch out for the herd instinct.
4. Buy what you like.
5. It's not for free.
6. Accept no substitutes.
7. The thrill really is in the hunt.
8. Judge watches in your hands, not online.
9. Experiment.
10. Always buy on the bracelet.
Another really good thread/post from the past I stumbled upon from a link in a recent thread. I heavily edited the quote but it is worth going back to page 1 and reading the entire post.

@nycWATCHnerd I see you seem to be enjoying some older threads recently. Therefore can I recommend spending some time with the Thread reference thread. This contains links to older threads that forum members felt should be preserved for future reference. I bet you’ll happily spend some time reading through everything found in there if you’ve enjoyed these.
