Thanks for the heads up i hope this will save me time and money.I went through that impulse buy stage of watch collecting where quantity seems to override quality or need, like a child in a sweet shop i wanted to try everything. This impulse seems to be subsiding though i think this is true of most things in life we find the styles we like that suit our personalities and refine our tastes over time

I would also add that you shouldn't listen to those who say things like "No collection is complete without a ........ "

It's your collection after all.

It surely does have a cost. I fought the good fight and resisted the temptation to get a green C60 in the 30% sale but someone (who shall remain nameless, but he knows who he is) posted a link to the NN sale and all was lost. At this very moment someone at CW is packing my NN C60 up.

Great post, Richard. Points 2, 3 & 4 are crucial. If I have learnt anything it is do as much research as possible on my desired acquisition/s. Reconnaissance is never wasted. I have changed my mind about a watch umpteen times after learning more about it or examining it more closely and comparing it to its competitors. The advice I give myself is simple: Think about what draws me to a watch and why; why do I want it; how much am i prepared to pay but always within my self imposed spending cap and most of all be prepared to change my mind and perceptions when I see the thing in the flesh.

I'm content with what I have now but several pieces will go on sale in the not too distant future. I think of these as my trial and error pieces because I suspect I will lose heavily on them. I see this as part of my right of passage to owning, collecting and enjoying different watches. Part of this process of learning about the things I like and dislike in a watch has helped me shape my modest collection of keepers. LD

Yep, agree with all of that. I think because of not having a budget to buy the watches i want i have been able to learn these lessons without actually buying the watches. Am ready to take my time and have a focused approach.

I agree with all of your comments and henceforth will refer to Rule #2 as 'downer's rule'.

Personally though I think Rule #4 is as important. I can never understand why people ask on Forum, 'what watch should I buy' or 'which one do you prefer'?

Why would you do that?

Everyone's different and watches should be purchased to suit you and your personality.

Try going into a Mens Department and asking a complete stranger (or even your best mate for that matter), "Should I buy boxers, briefs, jockeys or a thong"?

and relax.

Personally, I'm a boxer kind of a guy.

I must admit, I don't have an issue with asking peoples advice about watch purchases. After all, if someone owns a watch, they can advise how it wears, have you had any issues, after sales service, strap/bracelet availability etc, etc.

There are many things that can be found out from those in the know.

As for the old grundies..... Thong or mankini every time :D

Great summary of what many of us do! Rule 4 is completely fundamental  and I've been biting my lip for ages wondering at the madness of people asking what undies they should out on in the morning.
So I wish I was James Bond, just for the day.

Ill respectfully disagree with your point about asking for advice. Ive done it a few times here and can say that it has been nothing but beneficial.

Many times people are on the fence between two watches, which like in my most recent case of asking are remarkably similar.

Not only did i learn a lot about the two different watches that was not disclosed on their respective sales sights. But i also heard from members personal experiences from owning those exact watches. Not to mention, that as a result of me asking i was pointed in direction of a third watch i had not heard of before or considered that was a nice middle ground between the two options i was considering and might as well be what i ultimately purchase. I would not have had that option had i not asked for advice and opinions on the forum first :):)

'The thrill is in the hunt' whilst true it's also kind of sad, technically the major buzz with watch collection is buying the thing not owning it. I mean the thrill of owning a motorbike Is not the researching and buying process it's the bonding with it. Its the major issue I have with calling this a hobby and results in an endless circle, like an addict trying to get his next fix. I've been there.
I miss all the great things that may never be.
