Just One Watch - Can I survive?
Just One Watch - Can I survive?
I’ve just ordered a new CW, thanks to heavily reduced prices in their website for specific models, and it is time for a personal experiment - can I get by with just one mechanical watch, all day / every day, come what may, no restrictions? One week? One month? Six months…?
My daily working environment has changed over the last few years. I regularly work along side heavy machinery, amplifiers, audio equipment and all sorts of associated knocks, bangs and electro-magnetic fields. Not ideal environments for a mechanical watch. Also, thanks to final de-restrictions to LockDown rules, my own, personal hobbies related to water sports, camping, cycling, hiking and generally knocking about outdoors (getting wet, cold and miserable) have finally kicked into full throttle. I can now also get back into leading Duke of Edinburgh expeditions too.
So. One watch for all these? One watch to rule them all?
My preferred model was ordered just an hour or so ago. I need to phone CW Towers in the morning to confirm Royal Mail delivery (as opposed to DPD who I don’t trust as far as I can throw them) and I should be all good to go over the next few days. An assortment of straps, and one bracelet, have been put aside to dress up /down as required.
Watch this space, and keep well..

There are certain religious orders who consider self-flagellation a good idea.
I don't subscribe to that idea either.

If your plan goes to plan (and I’m willing you on all the way and want updates), you’ll be a god among watch forumites. Have courage, Hobbit, the journey will be treacherous...

Re: Just One Watch - Can I survive?
I see this challenge as something similar to giving up smoking. An absolute nightmare for the first few weeks and months but it gradually gets easier over time until not swapping watches is just normal again.
I hope you make it through to the end and re-emerge happy, smiling, and content.

Next week is Ash Wednesday (start of Lent), for those who don’t know.
Maybe we could give up multiple watches for Lent!

Good luck. Love the idea of this myself but never managed. Look forward to seeing how it goes and what watch you have chosen.

Re: Just One Watch - Can I survive?
I manage it about three times a year for a couple of weeks as a one-watch traveller. And with very few exceptions, I did wear the same watch for most of the summer and well into the autumn last year (C63 GMT). Sometimes I come home from a trip and find that it’s several days before I feel like putting a different watch on. Let’s face it, before discovering the rabbit hole I wore the same watch for 17 years.

Re: Just One Watch - Can I survive?
Obviously we could do it. Many years ago, I expect a lot of us did not have multiple watches and happily buckled up the same watch day after day.
However, once you have a few to choose from it's very hard not to change. I wore my new moonphase only for a full moon cycle, and I really wanted to pick a different watch as the month wore on.
A week or two would be fine, but I wouldn't commit to doing longer than that.

Re: Just One Watch - Can I survive?
In a couple of weeks I will be off on holiday touring the fabulous island called Tasmania for 2 weeks. Yoohoo!
I don't need to keep track of where any watch is other than the one that will be on my wrist.
Most likely the white dial Sealander GMT. GADA indeed. Perhaps inspired by a certain (unpublished) travel writer.....
I anticipate when I get home there will be a flurry of watch-setting and alternating every couple of hours

I don't know whether this helps but I started off with the same mindset... I say 'started off' as I have about 8 watches now... I think...! It's a slippery slope!

Re: Just One Watch - Can I survive?
I could.
But I wouldn’t.
If I did, I would likely pick this one… Everything I need in a watch.
Nothing that I don’t.
The nearest I have come to wearing one watch for a prolonged period, in recent years, was during a summer month in Greece. Well not quite one, but I did stick to the same two for about 90-95% of the time. Close enough.

I've thought about stopping my meds, too, but I've never gone through with it. Good luck!
I am excited to see what watch you chose for this experiment.
