I do not tell her anything anymore. About 3 years ago I bought and sold a lot, telling everything to my wife. She does not like watches, which tired her and told me "do what you want but do not make me dizzy with watches anymore". Now I buy few and sell less, but I do not have to tell her anything, sometimes she tells me " this is cool, I didn't know him " and she returns to forget the watches.

I feel your pain! My missus has basically given up on me now. One thing that that seemed to help was buying her a rolex! you could try that :D

How lucky, I would love for that to happen. But I have to look and buy the watches alone.

Does the OP's good lady (or anyone else’s come to that) ever end up in the Lady Dog House at his behest for stuff that she buys?

Or is Kennel Street a one-way, boys only thoroughfare?

If so, why? :ka:

Explain.
Ha ha, there’s no Lady Dog House here, and if there were, she’d refuse to ever go in it. Purchases of packets of uneaten salad, bags, shoes, cushions and Dyson products go unmentioned in this household. All the replies have given me some interesting adds to my list of justifications though. I’m aiming for mild annoyance today as the best case outcome.

Jeez, do you have to ask to borrow the trousers too? Man up and grow a pair is my only advice

No doghouse at my house in either direction. My Omega purchase was balanced out with purchasing SWMBO a Riese & Muller electric bike which at £3.5k wasn't cheap. In fact she has nearly all the watches in our house......and a growing amber jewellery collection......and several archery bows so in fact she does rather better out of things than I do, especially as I've stopped buying watches and recently turned down the opportunity of buying a stunning vintage watch even though I had the money for it.

The only stuff that gets quietly slid in through our front door are presents for her :D

Make sure you hide the knife afterwards just in case.

I can't offer you any advice as all is OK in our house watch-wise, I've had approval to buy a Moonwatch for a few months now and still haven't got around to travelling to London to buy 1.

Easy for you to say, from your name I’m assuming you’re from rugby league country (Balmain or Castleford?), so you have an advantage over me, as I’m on the underside of the North/South divide in this house. The pair I grew have been beaten back into their current whimpering condition over the years, and I haven’t found out how to grow a new set. Tried Google, found this but it didn’t look like it would help: https://www.menkind.co.uk/grow-a-pair

Actually, it was fine. As predicted the dog went off, the parcel was large and I got a “not another watch”, the customary “right, no more watches” [-X and a head shake from my son. The watch itself is fantastic, and as I tried to point out how great it was (“look, no date window!”), Mrs. 0uatiOW picked up the Tudor for comparison, inspects it, and failed to realise it wasn’t one of the officially approved acquisitions. Result. Must remember to get a lottery ticket now.

Try buying vintage - or at least something that's a good few years old and doesn't have that shiny new look about it. Much easier to 'disguise' :)

At my old guitar shop we had a customer who only ever bought sunburst basses. When I asked why he said that he was on a long term mission to only own a number of, very valuable, vintage instruments. He started off with a couple of 'OK' ones and had been slowly rotating them for things much more valuable. Each time a new one came in he sold an old one and his wife couldn't tell the difference at all.

She even told him to buy the odd new one now & then because he'd been so 'good' at controlling his purchases. . .

0uatiOW wrote:A few months ago after a bit of a flurry, my wife told me in no uncertain terms, “no more watches”. Admittedly that was after a couple of lemons arrived from Catawiki sellers in the space of 4 weeks. So vehement was the order, that when I announced a few days later that I was expecting a package, and asked if she would make sure the dog didn’t destroy it, she told me right off.... before I could explain it was just a strap (one or Erikasoriginals finest).

I now have a problem, balancing the competing demands of an incurable habit and a narky wife.

On a recent business trip, I happened to be in the same AD as a Tudor GMT, which was available because I was the first person to ask to see it (it had arrived the previous day). I uhmmed and ahhhed for at least 2 or 3 minutes, then took the plunge. It’s a fabulous watch and my most expensive. To be honest, part of my decision was because it was there in front of me - I wasn’t expecting to find one available, but now I had a new challenge (see above).

I did what every self-respecting real man would do. I put it on, concealed the box in my bag, and crossed my fingers. I was rewarded for my bravery, because my wife didn’t notice. She’s seen it a couple of times but hasn’t realised what it is, or that it came P.M. (post Moratorium). I’m surprised at the ease of my success, because it’s the only Pepsi I have, and at 41mm it doesn’t hide itself (it’s on a red-brown crocodile strap too, as my overconfidence grows).

Yesterday I picked something up in SC, and it arrives tomorrow by RMSD. The chance of me getting it the house without it being noticed (thanks in part to the size of the box it’s being shipped in, and part, I’m sure, because of our noisy pooch), so by this time tomorrow I will surely be a bit black and blue (a bit like the watch itself, which is a tenuous and clumsily assembled clue).

So, the point of all this is: what lengths have others gone to conceal their addiction from loved ones? What excuses have you contrived to get the latest acquisition past your suspicious significant other? Or is honesty the best policy?

Or, for a bit of Schadenfreude, what’s the funniest story of not getting away with it?
The Tudor GMT is a fantastic watch, I bought one of the first ones in early June & it gets more wrist time than all of my watches at the moment, truly a great buy.
I would your foot down & tell your wife its her or the watches, then run a mile very quickly.
