If going for a box please keep the weight and height low, its easier to fit and ship when selling it. The Eterna box is heavy. I've heard that the LLD box isn't shy either.

Of course, if you are buying a Patek, you better expect something extraordinary. I really like GO boxes with the loupe.

A wooden high-gloss box is nice on first opening, and having for resale purposes, but truth is I keep my watches in a watch box proper, so the rest of the time the OEM's presentation case languishes in a cupboard taking up space. I do like the travel case you get with a Magrette -- they have a dual purpose and take far less space when storing. E.g.,

WR: 7.25"

Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.

i wish magrette had made that travel case more, well, travel friendly. it's way bigger than it needs to be for travel.

It's not unlike most standard watch boxes/cases in that respect is it...?
But it is more useful after unpacking than most others.

No, it's not. But if they'd gone all the way to travel case instead of halfway, that woulda been great.

A premium product should come in premium packaging.

Out of my watch boxes, I think the Tag Heuer leather ones are the nicest, though one came in a plastic box which is pretty naff. The Omega ones are generally reasonable, a nice size and shape, not too big. Damasko was a bit underwhelming, and CWL? They're ok for the price point, but if they're to move any further up market the box is something that would require attention, the problem is they're not too far off what the likes of TW Steel, Citizen and co give out. They all end up stacked up in a cupboard though, as others have mentioned they're required to retain resale value.

For travel purposes I use one or two of the TH service boxes they send out. They're small, light and full of protective packaging, which is just right for that purpose.

I love a good box, it adds to the experience. When you think of the margin of some of the non-"rolex of the internet" brands, you should really expect a "wow" when unpacking your new watch. Looking at some of the boxes you get with the moonwatch etc, I'd certainly feel like I'd invested rather than spent a large sum of money

Once unpacked though, it is a pain storing them. Even without ever wanting to part with a timepiece, you still want to keep it whole.

I think CWL have it about right for the price point, but agree more should be made of the special editions. The plane/car parts pieces should come with small models in the box like FC do with their Healey etc!

A few months ago, a whole cohort from on here bought Dreyfuss pocket watches very much reduced from Amazon. Most of us returned the watches due to faults! But the huge, high gloss wooden boxes were something to behold. Better than Cartier, Zenith and Omega, MUCH better than IWC....
Just shows, don't judge a book by its cover....

I do think that the box is very much a part of the buying experience. The trick is to find a way to be wowed without paying dearly for something that goes quickly to long term storage.

Oh, yes. The metal box can be used for other things as well, like storing your bits and bobs (pencils, erasers etc.) or watch straps! I like boxes that can be used for something they were not intended for... Having said that, my unloved Stowa still resides in that box and has never made it into the watch box .

Another example of disproportionate presentation boxes is the box that came with my Montblanc pen: tiny little pen in a huge box that made me walk my bike home because I couldn't put it in my backpack (I tried it and my Eastpack bag actually is a black hole that swallows everything; sometimes things get lost in there as well...)

The pen, a Montblanc Brahms:

The pen in its box:

And now the entire box with pen, booklet, and tuning fork (nice extra, but I have got more than enough tuning forks...):

Has anyone got a Montblanc watch box. I hope they aren't that big

At this point I feel compelled to play my watch box "top trump"... the Speedmaster 50th:

Opening the outer box, you see the first glimpse of the inner wooden box, with a lovely inlaid? Speedmaster logo..

Inside the rather large box, the watch is revealed...

And, underneath the watch in a second tray containing a rather special tool kit, including spring bar tool, screwdrivers, spare spring-bars and a black alligator strap and steel deployant.

Image

Taking that '1957' branding to extremes..

These little boxes contain spare tips for the springbar tool, screwdrivers and spare spring bars for both straps.
