Why would you wear a watch in the shower - how do you wash underneath it?? You'll have to take if off to dry your wrist and the watch anyway...!!!!

I'm wondering how much of the published warnings are more ar*e covering by the manufacturers to avoid claims rather than statements of fact?

The honest truth is that none of my CW's have ever seen more than a few drops of rain in a light summer shower, if I am going out on the jet ski or going for a snorkel I always wear one of the G-Shocks, that's what they are there for, maybe if CW did a watch with a tide clock I might give it a go!

There are also warnings in some places about detergents and soap causing problems to watches. For example, from a Casio site:
Even if a watch is water-resistant, avoid wearing it in the bath or in area where detergents (soap, shampoo, etc.) are being used. Such conditions can reduce water resistance.
Anyone have any insights on this aspect?

Anyone has heard of tales/experience with this?

i guess i should check with the customer service on this. someone else must have asked the same question to CW before.
I have a personal experience with one CASIO that I owned which was rated 100m water resistant. I used to take showers with it and basically never took it off and one day I noticed condensation on the inside of the glass. I was the first owner and it had not been opened until that time. So ever since then I don't trust watches around hot water(and I don't particularly like hot showers) and always remove them before bath. Keep in mind that rubber(or whatever the insulation is made of) changes its properties with time and treatment so eventually it's going to give.

P.S. If you are considering hot springs in Japan then you'd have to leave the watch behind as well as everything else. :D It's considered very bad etiquette to bring anything else besides a small towel with you.

Worth quoting the Water Resistance paragraph from the C60 Trident Pro 600 Owner's Manual (repeated in other models too), I've highlighted the relevant sentence.;-

Water resistance

Although your watch has been through vigorous
static pressure testing, it is worth remembering that
there are many variables that can affect the water
resistance of your watch.
For instance, arm movements during swimming
and the sudden impact of diving and water sports
will drastically increase the pressure the watch is
under. Wearing your watch in the bath, shower, or
sauna can also have an effect as a rapid increase
in temperature can cause seals to expand and in
extreme cases, malfunction or create condensation.

For these reasons, the water resistance rating of your
watch (as shown) should only ever be considered
a guideline and we strongly recommend they are
always adhered to

For the above reason, whilst I've not worn my Trident Chrono for swimming yet, when cleaning it I rinse it under the cold, not hot, tap.

Food for thought.

Guy

guess they can void the warranty based on this. i don't plan to bring the watch to a hot spring, or sauna. but it is interesting to know what design factors, and unit testings are done to the watch, and i guess hot water/sauna isn't on the list.

I think the paragraph above the one that Guy highlighted from the Trident manual is rather suspect!

I.e. that arm movements during swimming DRASTICALLY increase the pressure. It is my understanding that the impact of this is negligible.

I also advocate avoiding wearing in shower/bath/sauna etc. Used to wear my Seamaster Pro 300m chrono diver for swimming and then showered with it on to give it a rinse. One day I noticed the crystal had fogged up! Took it to my ad the next day to have it checked, they said all is ok after checking. A few weeks later one of the chrono pushers fell off! Took it in to be fixed and they replaced the pusher. A few weeks later the other pusher fell off and under the loupe I could also see that the hands had light surface pitting! I had it sent to Swatch service rather than my ad for a full service and inspection under warranty. They said that the hands and also the chrono pusher circlips had corroded due to water. They replaced the dial, hands, pushers, seals, and all gaskets under warranty.

The moral of the story, don’t risk wearing it anywhere near hot water and soap! Get some cheapo digital Casio for swimming/bathing if you have to.
