I had a quartz watch with a sweeping second hand was smoother than 2824 movement but like all quartz watches it broke. I can't remember what movement was in it though. It was expensive that I do remember. :(

There is more than one quartz movement with sweeping seconds' hand. Seiko have one.

Hand wound watches are coming back to fashion but, at 54, I remember what a pain they used to be when I was young and had to remember (usually, first thing in the morning is a good idea) to "charge" them.

Automatic have their own fashion as, in a few cases, it is great to admire chraftmanship behind a movement.

For all singing and dancing quartz cannot be beaten and applications (complications, if we can call them so) are numerous.

The most reliable (spot on timekeeping) watch that I have is an atomic watch with solar panel dial (hence, no need for batteries either). I think I have had it for over 10 years. Time is perfect (of course) as the signal is picked up (here in UK) from Rugby atomic station. It is great to know the exact time but usually it sits by the window so to catch sunlight.

For me, an all mechanical automatic is the only thing.
