Green or dragonfly C63 GMT?

Post by blackemcee »

Hi guys,

I'm looking forward to buy my first CW watch and I'm really struggling to choose between a green and dragonfly blue versions of C63 GMT. I love the green color combined with orange hands, this option looks so cosy and relaxed, reminds me of a classic Alpinist that I like, but I'm not sure I quite like the 'scratches' on the dial it has. On CW official photos the dial looks matte and brushed, but on real-life photos I've found (not so much unfortunately, looks like a green one is not a very popular choice) these scratches sometimes look a little too much, especially under bright light, they make the dial look too washed out. Are there any owners here? What's your opinion on that?

On the other hand, a dragonfly version is really eye catching and much more popular, it looks a lot like Alpinist SSASS version, which is just stunning. But I have some doubts. Isn't it too bright and shiny and kitchy for a daily watch? If it was one of many, I would certainly go for it, but I'm not a collector and I want this watch to be one of two I wear regularly (another one is Seiko sbcj031 I'm waiting for right now).

Maybe if I saw two of them together on the same photo/video, this would help me to choose, but I failed to find any of those. So I'm really hoping you guys could give me some advice. Ordering both and then returning one of them is too much of a hassle for me.

I've seen the Green Ombré in person on the standard C63 and the effect is very subtle. I actually prefer it to the Dragonfly but to be honest, it is completely personal preference. One differentiating detail is that the Ombré starts from a matte green base so overall it has a more matte look.

Here’s the green Sealander GMT taken last week.

My personal vote would be for the green rather than the blue. I think it’s more wearable day-to-day, I actually quite like the ‘scratches’ on the dial. The blue is a lovely color but just less subtle.

@timepieces_and_bags this photo was taken with a flash or under bright light, right? That's the kind of a problem I wrote about, on those photos the dial looks a little washed out. But I believe in most situations it looks different, more 'velvet'?

I also love how the greens combine with brown and green leather straps. The dragonfly version is always on a bracelet, and this one has so much options.

Compare these two photos, the C63 by RichM and the C63 GMT (36mm) by Qubo both from the CWLOTD thread. These are pretty representative of how they look in real life in my experience.

It would be the green for me, but as others have said it's a personal choice. Here's what I do faced with a binary choice. Flip a coin. Your reaction to the result tells you where the decision lies.
However if you are still undecided, then the bother of ordering two and sending one back may prove less bother than buying a watch that turns out to be not quite right - and ultimately an expensive disappointment.

This was at the recent Windup fair in New York so was very bright and the lighting isn't the best (photos posted above by @rkovars are much better in my opinion). I think under the vast majority of light conditions it has the more matte and earthy look which I really like.

Totally a personal choice, but I do love the dragonfly.

I had an impression that if returning from the EU (I live in NL) you loose VAT which is 21%, but now I’m not sure, need to recheck. If I’m wrong than probably ordering both is an option.

Those photos are really helpful, thanks! I’m definitely leaning towards the green one.

Can I throw a spanner in the work and say black. I bought the dragonfly last year. Although I still love it, I quickly grew tired of it. Only this month, I suddenly realised I should have got the black dial and sure enoug, I bought it on the consort bracelet and I could not be happier. It is one of my favourite in my collection. Stunning.

In general terms I prefer blue to green. Some greens are exceptions. I've always like the green Aquis for instance b

I think I prefer the dragonfly here.

Outdoor lighting showing how it normally looks to me.
Like the others have posted, the choice is really a matter of personal opinion. I don’t own the dragonfly version but have owned the green ombré GMT since its release. I rotate wearing my watches but the green Sealander most likely gets worn more than the others. It is generally my first choice to take on vacation. I would definitely put it in the daily wearer category.

Dragonfly out of those 2 but I think black or white have the longevity factor!
