totally agree on that, kip. when i'm looking at watches in jewelers, even those who carry a wide variety of higher end brands, i've found that far too many salespeople aren't that knowledgeable about their own watches, let alone something outside their list of brands.
been my experience as well...a lack of knowledge and enthusiasm!
enjoyed your post, Kip!

Kip, I'm slightly holding my breath until the nay-sayers tell you that this wasn't a representative survey, and that CWL have indeed lost their way regardless of your findings......
However, i think this is a brilliant thing for an aficionado to do! It must have been fun indeed. I'm also unsurprised as to the results. The photos now we're seeing of the Slimline and the C9 5day just bring them to life for me.

Speaking of whether or not staff in jewellers and watch-sellers are real watch lovers or not, I had my first experience of really engaging with a staff member as I was looking at some Montblanc watches in a high street window. I tend to avoid these places - my face doesn't fit, I love the watches but have no money to spend on them, and neither can i really talk with any authority on the subject. I'm too embarassed just to wander in and look usually. But this woman engaged me and we discussed the beauty of some of the Montblanc dials. But she was keen to interest me in Rado - as it turns out because she was wearing one. I told her I don't like ceramic as it's too shiny but she kept plugging. Imagine my delight (and her blank face) when she asked what I wore and I showed her my C11!
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

That was a great idea Kip, really interesting to hear how those watches are viewed by those that handle watches every day. Thank you for posting that up.

I have only once been into a watch shop to look at watches (usually can't be bothered) but after Basle World last year, I wanted to see the latest Rolex Yachtmaster ll. The salesman was only too pleased to show it to me, and I was somewhat surprised when he expressed an interest in the Mk1 C5 I had just taken off. Shouldn't have been really - the Mk1 C5A is a very pretty piece.

I've said elsewhere that I'd never buy a blinging Rolex, the Yachtmaster ll is very nice but just too 'bright' for me. Now if CWL ever do a countdown Chrono with white face and a partly blue bezel....
There's always time for one more.

Paul: it can quite a good experience to spend time in a decent watch shop, where the staff make you feel welcome and don't try to force their preferences on you. I've made several visits to local dealers who now know me and my genuine interest in timepieces. They know if I'm just investigating or seriously on the hunt, and they treat me accordingly. They've even opened up some watch cases for me to look at the movements. You should find a dealer like that; I think you might like it.
