Forum Rankings
Re: Forum Rankings
This is the only forum I have ever posted on so I can't claim to have a great knowledge of these things. However, I never give any consideration at all to the ranking a person has, their knowledge, opinions and contributions are all that concern me. In fact I did not know the rankings until I noticed this post. If I felt the need to find out how often a person has posted I would have foolishly just looked at the number of posts.

Re: Forum Rankings
As mentioned above, post count is a measure of addiction (or commitment). If there was a prize for more posts it'd be different, but as it is it's just a bit of fun.
With that in mind :-
0-49 toe-dipper.
50-499 contributor.
500-4999 should get out more.
5000+ beyond help.

Re: Forum Rankings
It always amuses me when an "Expert" asks a "Newbie" question.
It's just a bit of fun, but maybe make the post count higher for each rank, it would be fun to see how many members would throw their toys out of the cot when they were downgraded.

No more Quartz (except when I cannot resist).

Re: Forum Rankings
This thread might generate some lively discussion.
I must admit to feeling quite chuffed some time ago when I became an 'expert', when in reality I am still at the bottom of the learning curve over watches.
I quite like the titles we are given based on our post count, but do take them with a pinch of salt and a degree of open-mindedness.

Re: Forum Rankings
How about a ranking system that increases with the number of daily post counts, in a not too dissimilar way to how ones ranking on an online game increases the more you do something like, say, head shots in Unreal Tournament? That way we all start as Newbies each and every day and only attain Godlike status if we post loads. Then we can watch all those super keen newbies gain access to the SC and rank highly.
In actual fact, I don't take much notice of the rankings. It used to give me a thrill when I achieved a higher ranking but it all became irrelevant when the Bullingdon Club was removed from TZ-UK. Now I am just happy to provide the occasional post with little or no reference to the total number of posts.

Re: Forum Rankings
At the risk of sounding a bit curmudgeonly, I really don't care about the forum "rankings" -- it just doesn't bother me one way or another. I know it's just a bit of fun and I'm aware that they're there, under the avatars, but I can't say I've ever bothered to read them or take note of who has what.
Occasionally it's useful to be aware of how active someone has been and who has previously made a large number of contributions but a simple "number of posts" counter would suffice for that.
It's a resounding "Whatever..." from me (!).

Re: Forum Rankings
My word. What a bunch of old killjoys. There was a much more imaginative answer on the original thread.

Eddie on TZ-UK used to frequently change the names and pictures although he has not done that as much with the new forum software. It is just a bit of fun. If you don't care about it and never look then you won't mind what is chosen then. I am glad TZ-UK was changed as I was heading towards a Gordon Brown.
I think the terms expert, senior and god should go. One idea is to use the model numbers in the order that they first went on sale. See the timeline on the right. http://www.christopherward.co.uk/about_us.html. That provides a bit of historical context and ensures Newbies always have a question like "Why am I a C5 Malvern?"

Re: Forum Rankings
As a new member who still has his posts scrutinized, I would say that I joined (having previously followed) the forum to be able to gain advice if required and learn more about watches in general. Knowledge to me does not necessarily need a rank, so I don't really worry about such things and the number of posts does not mean that person has anything less or more informative to say than the next. As a measure of other things such as dedication to the brand etc that is different.
For me, if it wasn't for forums like this one I would not have ended up with some interesting watches both CWL and other brands such as the Seagull 1963 (not the most expensive watch in the world but I like it and it has an interesting history). For my part I would like to continue posting but I know I will never reach high levels of posts, just happy to be a part of a community that shares its passion for watches and to know that if I needed advice there are those on this forum who are able and willing to pass on the information. And with that in mind - how do you add information about your location and number of CW watches?

Re: Forum Rankings
I think as long as members take it as it is intended then a) it shouldn't really matter and b) it should be fun....
Personally, I have no idea of my post count after hanging around 3.5 years or so but probably not very high as I read a lot more than I post and I generally post to share experience as I have little expertise so having a title of guru or grandmaster when I still feel like a novice seems a bit daft, but then its just a bit of fun.
Mix it up, they say a change is as good as a rest....
