Forum independance?

Post by birdfeeder »

A fair comprising might be making a section of the forum not searchable on Google and only accessible after having met certain criteria - X months membership and/or Y number of posts.

NOT a section of the forum for discussing leaks.

Completely respect the public embargo but deleting posts is not a great experience for what is really a enthusiast of the brand.

Perhaps deleting a post(s)/topic under these circumstances may not be a great experience, but what would you have us do?

If a post is made, whether in error or not, the post/topic still must go away. :?

I've talked to Kip about this in the past and he has been very patient in discussing it with me even though we disagree (mildly).

I have wondered and continue to wonder if these agreements (between the mods and CWL) are in the best interest of the forum.

This is actually a fairly heavily moderated forum (check out the rules) ~ I am not sure it's healthy.

I understand keeping quiet for a certain period but once the watch world is discussing it and photos are posted on the internet it would seem the horse has left the barn.

The agreements between the forum and CW allow us to take advantage of previews (sometimes exclusive) and get the opportunity to have occasional special sales. How is this bad?

Most of our rules are really common sense. The others are either forum/topic specific or to maintain our "Family" and "suitable for work" atmosphere. Many are simply guidelines that help the uninitiated to navigate the forum. Not sure how providing an outline of how this forum expects its members to act is unhealthy. We had to put them in writing several years ago because too many were forgetting what common sense was. It was our founders idea of which I wholeheartedly endorsed and shared in putting together.

As for when the horse has left the barn....it is about our word and commitment to honor same. It is not how others act, but the integrity that we show.

We may still need to agree to disagree.

You're one of the most polite people on the internet Kip.

(No joking or sarcasm in my reply, just a straight up observation).

I hope that CW identify any reviewers of this and other new releases, who don't respect their confidence, and consider not giving them exclusive access.

Releasing news of this on 13th, nearly two weeks early is a bit much. I found an article, but no comment until the mods say so.

Not likely that CW will identify anyone who has violated the embargo nor will I mention any that I am aware of.

CW has admonished those that have broken embargoes and removed them from the press list and discontinued sending watches to reviewers who have done the same.

I think that's what I meant. I didn't mean publicly name and shame, I just meant don't give them advance info in future.

I suspect that Lawrence and I, were we ever to discuss this in person, would also mildly disagree. Discussion and disagreement is actually not a bad thing. The forum is not the free-for-all that Twitter or other forums are. I remember the hell of DPReview forums at their height...

In general the relationship between the forum/Mods and CW is a good thing. CW actually own the forum but let it be run by Kip and others. This relationship works well for CW and the Mods. They spend a lot of time doing work that we never see and they do it voluntarily. The relationship is symbiotic for sure. The Mods get a tiny place at the table. They surely know more about parts of the future for CW launches than we do. That's fine.

Is the forum too heavily moderated? I don't think it is. Participation on the forum is voluntary. Very few people read the rules when they join but they are brought to your attention. The rules aren't as bad as a typical software EULA. There have been occasions when the atmosphere broke down. Remember the last new logo crisis? That got very angry and personal. People were banned, some of them long term and valued contributors. They were still banned and deserved it.

We all get excited about new CW launches. We want to share our enthusiasm and if we find a leak somewhere else on the web it's natural to want to post it here. But, and here's the rub, just don't. I think you can probably DM people with the news but don't post it. It's that simple. Folks may not like it but it's not your town. As a motor racing photographer and go hot-side at a circuit the first lesson you learn is that the track marshals are the mayor and sheriff of their town. You do what they say or you don't stay. In a much more gentle way it's the same thing here. I don't think changing the status quo would benefit anyone. We get the privilege of early knowledge of new releases and we keep quiet about it. Everyone benefits from this.

Here's a challenge since there is always an alternative. If you want a CW forum with a different set of rules then set one up. Set your own rules. Let's see what happens. I have my beer and popcorn ready.

I had advance notice of the Forbes article via another avenue. I alerted the admins here and CWE and that’s all I did with the info prior to the Dune launch. I see no reason to play the leak game. I value the opportunity as it arises if CW wishes to share an advance preview with the ardent supporters and if asked to keep confidential I can abide by the request. I’m glad most others do, too.
