Faulty new C60 Trident

Post by Devon »

Well my delight at my new CW C60 Trident Pro didn't last long.
I received the watch last Tuesday, had the bracelet adjusted Saturday and started wearing it for 3 hours before the watch stopped. I managed to get it going again by gently tapping it into the palm of my hand but today after wearing if for 5 hrs the watch has stopped again.
Obviously I will be returning it this week and I think I will ask for my money back, rather than accept a replacement.
I am sure this doesn't happen often but it certainly spoils what should be a pleasant experience of what should be a good quality watch.

Quick question: have you hand-wound it?

Yes, I wound it a little when I adjusted the time and date to wear for the first time. Then after it started again, it ran fine overnight. I then wore it for 5hrs from 8am today before it stopped again at 1pm.

I’d suggest giving it a full wind (30-40 turns) and seeing how it goes. With an automatic much depends on your activity and wear patterns.

If you wind it as described then wear it all day, and it still stops, you have a problem.

I have just set the time and gave it a few winds but the movement appears stuck. Yesterday it restarted with a gently tap into the palm of my hand after which I simply reset the time, but now it won't move. I don't intend to strike the watch into my palm with any force to see if it restarts: time to return it and get my money back me thinks.

I haven't given it much thought until now, but there are probably some people for whom an automatic watch would not get enough activity to keep running.
Fully hand winding first, is a good call.

@Devon - there clearly seems to be an issue with the movement; best to leave it and get in touch with CW.

However, rather than merely returning it and getting a refund, CW will I'm sure offer to repair it for you, maybe even offer a replacement if they have any left.

You presumably bought it in the recent Sale at a Clearance price and you would only be able to repeat that price level otherwise by buying pre-owned.

Just a thought.

Having been down this road before with other brands (Oris and Hamilton) I would suggest if you love, or at least really like, the watch then send it back for service and/or replacement if that is an option.

Stuff happens all the time and this time it unfortunately happened to you. It does not mean that it is a bad watch or a bad company but rather it just means you got one that slipped through the cracks and it is an easily solvable problem.

I agree. I can wear an auto all day and if I'm not being particularly active, I can fail to add much charge to the watch. That's why you'll sometimes find me engaged in that rapid to-and-fro wrist action.
Any watch with a power reserve? 7750, SH21? I hand wind them to full.

Returning the watch seems fairly straightforward. I have printed off the forms ready to drop at a DHL collection point tomorrow.
I will email CW and see if they can exchange the watch as I enjoyed it for the short time I wore it. Otherwise I will take the refund as I don't want to have a broken watch that has been repaired even if it's been discounted.
Such is life.

@Devon
Are you sure you are fully winding it, and not just partially winding it?

Each to their own, but isn't that rather throwing the baby out with the bathwater?

Watch movements don't catastrophically fail (unless the click fails) so whatever is wrong, will actually be a relatively minor issue, albeit one that stops the watch and that could be something as simple as a tiny hair fallen into the balance.

I don't want to dispel and mystique, but there really isn't too much going on inside a simple three hand movement like this.

I wouldn't say I have an especially active lifestyle but it's always enough to keep an automatic watch going, even with only a few winds start it up. A desk based job still involves moving about, trips to fetch coffee, a commute for some, a pint after work and that has always been enough to keep my autos going. If maybe one takes their watch off and puts it on their desk for 7 hours when working that may make a difference as it's not having any "charge".

I've never had a problem and from my perspective it does sound like a fault with your watch. CW will address it and you'll have your lovely watch back if you do indeed decide to keep it.

The answer to this question appears to be reluctant.

I own several watches, I know how to wind a watch. HTH
