His was on the same strap you now have, but when that wore out I put it on a black padded strap with cream stitching. I didn't know if would work but it's quite a good match actually with the cream stitching.
I think a rally type strap would suit the MkI nicely, either the three hole or the more subtle smaller multi-hole type that you often see on old Heuers and the like.

That watch is a C60 Kingfisher SO. The color is burnt orange.
