After last years breakthrough award for the Bel Canto, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) 2024 finalists have just been announced and the CW Moonphase has been nominated in the Challenge class.

The finalists are…

• Christopher Ward London | Moonphase

• Furlan Marri | Disco Volante "Verde"

• kollokium | Projekt 01

• Otsuka Lotec | No.6

• SpaceOne | Tellurium

Interesting full list here. Lots of big names, and some well known names absent.
It says it's peer-nominated, rather like the Oscars, so I don't think CW are paying an entry fee themselves, if you will

Challenge section = 3000 CHF or less.

Last year the Bel Canto won the Petite Aiguille = 3000 - 10,000 CHF

The only other brand I’ve heard of in the Challenge section is Furlan Marri, and then only in passing.

@JAFO I think it’s a combination of both i.e., you can be approached to enter but can also submit your own pieces. From what I see it’s a CHF 800 entry fee and then CHF 7,000 if you’re nominated.

I’m interested to know what criteria the Challenge class is judged by other than the price that Steve mentions above. Couldn’t really find any further detail on that.

Not too many pieces across the entire nominations I’m too keen on!

GPHG is quite transparent with its rules. The challenge category has an eligibility and a

Challenge: watches with a retail price equal to or under CHF 3,000. Smartwatches are admissible in this category.

Yep a combination. If a brand has a watch nominated it can decline the nomination. As you say brands can also self nominate.

Certain brands never appear, because they don’t want to play.

I started looking at the three hander category and thought you could put together an excellent collection just from those. Then looked at the other categories and it looks to me a stronger set of watches on the shortlist than I recall in previous years. Far less WTF is that nominations!

GPHG results are rather predictable
Tudor will win something
MB&F will win something (they couldn't enter in 2023 as they won the Grand Prix d'Or in 2022)
Given how much Furlan Marri are media darlings right now I guess they will win something.
