Possibly a controversial viewpoint, but I didn’t cast a vote because for me it would’ve been for the best of a bad bunch.

I didn’t like any of the models chosen.

I do controversial. Sometimes it’s a good cure for apathy. Abstention is a choice in itself; perhaps, if it had been an option, the Forum Watch of the Year might be “None of the Above”.

91 votes last year but it was more of a three horse race then which may have encouraged voting.

The Bel Canto (Tiger!) was the clear favourite from the start. Let's see how this buzz pushes on into 2023 and the overall impact it may have.

A long time ago I was an amused/bemused observer of student union politics. When elections came round there was always a "Re-Open Nominations (RON)" option on the ballot. RON was a frequent winner for many posts but then someone would be plonked in the role because their CV needed a boost. I would support having a RON or None of the Above option for "Watch of the Year". Absent the C1 Bel Canto, RON would probably have been my choice for 2022 as well.

^^^ Why would you need that. The option is to not vote.

I don't even understand abstaining in this type of vote. It's not about what your favorite watch is, or whether you like any of the options.

The OP spelled it out clearly; what's the best release this year. Which watch released this year will have the most impact now and in years to come.

Feelings are left out of it. It's not a yes/no. Abstaining doesn't make sense given the parameters. Same with RON. All the eligible nominees are already included. Just a simple "which one will have most impact" vote is needed. Even if you think it's a bad bunch, there is still a best of that bad bunch.

I think there is a good bit of misunderstanding of or not paying attention to the given parameters.

Well that's true Kip. The watch of the year poll puts you in a lose/lose position. For everyone who decides not to vote because they don't like the options there will be someone who complains about forum apathy and a lack of votes. That's the nature of forums, I believe. Having a RON option wasn't a serious proposal from me but it would give those who don't like any of the options a place to voice their thoughts. Like I said, you can't win this one either way.

I can see the sense in having that option for a the scenario you describe - election of candidates to a post - where you may feel that none of the nominees are worthy of election and a wider pool to select from would be beneficial. It's the same principal used in recruitment & selection where employers re-advetise a post if there are no suitable applicants: "previous applicants need not apply".

However, when all the new watches from CW are listed, then there are no more options to add to the selection so I can't see what re-opening nominations would achieve? - unless I'm being a bit stupid? If I am, I expect that someone will say so quite quickly!

To be fair I have lost quite a few brain cells over the festive period, but I did enjoy my case of winter ales.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

I'd argue based on your tenure and post count that you DO have an interest in this subject.

You have no interest in any of the watches. But that's not the aim of the vote.

I may be wrong, happy to be corrected, but wasn’t the C63 Sealander GMT 39mm also a new addition?

The Sealander 36mm was listed, but that size for me is a bit naff for a man.

Sorry, I didn't express myself very well in my comments above - You are correct to say that I do have interest in the subject of watches (sometimes a bit too much) but I did not want to spend time looking into, comparing and considering the pros and cons of the various watches and therefore did not vote for the CW 2022 FWOTY.

I understood Kip's explanation of the parameters.

I have voted previously on various polls on here but chose not to on this occasion. Just a personal decision made hopefully without causing offence to anybody on here or to belittle their work and time in setting up the poll. Nor was it out of (what I consider) apathy although my actions could potentially fall into some of the dictionary meaning of apathy.

^^^ Understood! A minor but important difference. Probably at least a bit of apathy (although as you mention, investigating and making a choice you're comfortable with takes time that you might not be able to or want to allocate - we're all busy around the holidays). It's a choice anyone is free to make.
