Could Christopher Ward do another Revival Special Edition for their fans?

Post by jf72 »

Hi guys,

A few years ago Christopher Ward launched a Revival Special edition version of the C5 Malvern and the C8 Pilot with the old logo. Do you think with enough interest they would be willing to do the same again, this time with the MKII Trident... the 'breakthrough' watch for the brand?

What really impressed me the most about the limited editions is that they could have just re-released the C5 Malvern exactly exactly how it was, but they took the time to update the case so there was the additional reason to buy.

If there is enough interest for an old logo tribute Trident there should be two main principles: one, that it is updated to reflect improvements in the quality of the brand but two, that it does not impinge on the design language of the modern generation of Tridents – so no bevelled lugs or 6 O' clock date window for instance.

The C5 Malvern Revival watch case design could be developed into a diver watch, that could be 40mm and only 300m water resistant to address the size and thickness people had with the MKII Tridents.
  • It would have a clear caseback and the trident (corrected to be the same as the counterbalance) on the waves could be imprinted onto the rotor rather than the caseback.
  • Rather than the MKII's blocky hour markers, ones which match the onion watch hands – perhaps like the AP Royal Oak but with curved rather than hexagonal edges
  • Full lumed bezel markings, but keeping the markings indented

If Christopher Ward did this limited edition then, would they be equally happy to do it now?

CW seem happy enough to work on bespoke / custom designs I'd think the only issue might be whether these old cases are still available in number: a simple enquiry to CW should get your answer?
C60 MKI, MKII, MKIII: "some",
C6 & C60 Kingfishers,
C600 Tritechs,
C63 "some",
C65 "some",
C4, C40, C8, C9, C3, C5, C20 & 23FLE
Some other brands

ah so those special editions were done with surplus cases? I see... well perhaps a good starting point would be tracking down which Christopher Ward fans were responsible for liaising on the Revival editions, I wonder if any of the forum veterans here would happen to know??

The revival editions were ground up redesigns put out by CW. From the case up. I don't believe there was any input outside of their own design team on those (released 2022).

I’d love to see a revival edition of something from the motorsport line.

I wouldn’t rule out another revival release but I have no idea what motivated CW to do so in the first instance with the C5 and C8. I do like the updates the Malvern got and looking back I probably should have gotten one if only for the case updates. It could be interesting if CW were to delve into the back catalogue I’d be curious to know what they might choose to revive and revise.

A thought, and I don’t know how relevant it is:

Both of the previous revivals were of watches that had been retired for a long time. Certainly for the Malvern, it was an entirely new case and a different size.

The C60 Trident, however, has undergone long evolution and has never been out of production in one form or several. Would it be relevant to revive an older model when more evolved, updated and arguably better iterations exist in more or less permanent production? :-k

For the purposes of the original question, I don’t think an old logo and old design version of the trident would be that popular for the reasons Steve mentions.

However quite a few of us have said that CW needs to try to retain some long standing models and provide continuity to some of their range. The nearest we have to this is with the trident dive watch range and while I can’t see a revival, I can see CW using design cues from older versions at some point in the future.

Much in the same way that Omega does with its Seamaster where they have added aluminium bezels and old style wave patterns to newer watches, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a new CW trident with the current logo that shows some “inspiration” from past versions.
