If I bought a car as the third owner and it was still under manufacturers warranty I'd not accept the manufacturer to deny it a repair just because I was not the original owner. Surely the same would apply for watches even without paperwork to that effect?

That is true and the big boys do do a good job, I found Zenith very easy and responsive to deal with.
Not only that, but some official service centres usually replace standard worn parts as part of the service cost, which to be fair, is usually quite high.
