Chat GPT likes Christopher Ward

Post by mvlow »

Just for giggles I asked ChatGPT AI "what is a good watch collection if I want to spend no more than $2,500 per watch."

The C63 Sealander GMT made the GMT recommendations, and CW also made the tips section "consider independent brands", along with Monta and Baltic.

What do you think of the AI recommendations for each category? I tried the same question for $1,500 and $2,000 and CW made the cut in different sections. I haven't spent a lot of time trying to figure out AI, but it seems really interesting.

It was going so well with the suggestions, but I then read the tips for collecting. :problem:

Tip 4 is nonsense!

For full disclosure I own watches from each of those 3 brands, including 3 of my favourite watches. Fortunately I didn’t buy them for value retention or as an investment. :)

I agree that the recommendations aren't perfect, but I'm amazed how it came up with such a detailed answer with some pretty good recommendations in about 10 seconds!

@mvlow
They also managed to give 3 different styles for each type of watch, rather than say 3 dive watches that were virtually identical. Yep a good attempt.

I could certainly pick one from each group that I would be happy to wear.

I think what I'm more curious about is not what the AI chose but how it arrived at those choices. I know little about AI other than its whole functionality is derived from data collection and harvesting. Perhaps these choices are derived from nothing more than watch searches carried out on Google or similar. I wonder if it could be reliably depended on to always get the right watches for the right categories of watch, or whether its method of classification might not be 100%

It might be interesting to know the recommendations if someone else, different location or Country, asks exactly the same question.

Would the recommendations be the same?

I'd probably be a good candidate to experiment with this, but I have no idea how to access ChatGPT and I still harbor concerns about bringing on a machine-dominated post-apocalyptic future

Out of interest I asked “Which ten watches should be in every collection?”

You can try it. I won’t spoil the surprise. Actually, I can’t. There wasn’t one. Aye, there’s the rub.

A while back a group of us tried something similar for school reports, just as an experiment. You input some criteria and how the individual performs against them, and…bang! 200 words of deathless prose. Well, deadly was more like it. 200 words of amorphous anodyne guff that showed nary a shred of originality or knowledge of the child as a person. As interesting as Heinz chicken soup. Absolutely nothing remotely left-field. It was in general correctly spelt, though specifying UK English brought forth a few anomalies, and the grammar, vocabulary and syntax were acceptable on the whole.

Our conclusion was that artificial intelligence is no substitute for the real thing.

OK so I tried it (thanks for the link @mvlow)

Some quite different results, both in terms of format and recommendations.

Some good choices. I have two of those, the Hamilton and Sinn104 :)

We can debate the pros and cons of AI and what benefits it’s brings all day long. But don’t pick on Heinz chicken soup……

There is a tin in my medicine cupboard at home and it’s the perfect life saver for when you have one of those really bad colds that means you don’t even want to move. Only Heinz cream of tomato comes close when it really matters.

You’ll be having a go at pickled onion flavour monster munch next!

Maybe looking back Steve will regret his comment about the chicken soup. I guess that’s Heinz-sight for you.
