Re: can you overwind a 2824?
Thanks Kip,
Being new to this forum I’m still trying to figure out how to post a picture with text so I can show people how to recognize the ratchet wheel (gear) and its screw. It’s very easy to see when the rotor is out of the way. As I said before, you can look at the screw head that is slotted, of course, while you manually wind, counting the turns of the screw. Each full turn of this screw will give you about 6 hours of power reserve to the movement. Each full turn of the screw is giving the main spring one full turn.
Will someone tell me how to post a picture? Without the picture right now, here is how you would recognize the ratchet gear:
Take your watch off, look at the back, tilt it up so that the stem is on your right and the rotor falls to the bottom covering up the balance. Closer to the top edge of the movement you will see a large bronze colored gear with a blue color screw in the middle. It sits on top of the main spring barrel. That’s the ratchet gear which turns the main spring inside the barrel. If you’re still clueless, let me know. I’m hoping to include a large picture with my description. I might add that the main spring barrel sits just under the “5”
By the way, I had to edit this because the screw is not always blue. It may be silver. Chris Ward blues the screws from the pictures I've seen. But if you don't have a CW watch the screw may be sliver.

You will need a Photobox/photobucket account to upload your pics to.RSHETTLE wrote: I’m still trying to figure out how to post a picture , Russ
I use photobucket where you have 4 options under the piccy...click on 'direct link'....then the 'IMG' button on the text box on here, add your words, and thats it really!!
The online photo accounts are free to set up so its quite easy once you get the hang of it!!
Hope this helps

Re: can you overwind a 2824?
Daz,
I just realized I didn’t answer question about how many turns of the crown for a 12 hour reserve. I’ll have to see how many times it takes for me with my forefinger and thumb. I’m sure you realize, winding by this manor can vary greatly from person to person so all it can be is a less than precise result of a test. I’ll do it myself and let you know a little later what I come up with.

Once you've uploaded some pictures onto photobucket, all the pictures will be displayed quite small in a grid in 'Your album'.RSHETTLE wrote:John, Kip,

On and around each picture, you have several options like, delete, rotate etc, but under the piccy will be four boxes, the second one down (from memory) is the 'direct link'
If you left click on that, it will come up with 'copied'.....then go to your post on here, click the IMG box at the top, and two sets of brackets will come up, and you right click in between the brackets and paste, and it should be there ...then add any text you want.......

Roughly how many turns of the crown to charge my C5 up for 12 hours. This would be a help so as to ensure I do not keep it wound up to a maximum for the majority of the time. It would give me a little control of my winding as at the moment I have none. Thanks
Daz,
This is what I came up with: I watched the ratdhet screw and I gave my watch some manual turns. It took 3 winds to turn the main spring 1 revolution. I gave it a hefty wind and with my fingers 6 winds would give me 12 hours. Your fingers may give it less so I would say 6 to 8 turns for a 12 hour reserve.
However, I wasn’t sure if you were asking about the crown itself, in other words, were you asking how many turns of the crown? I also looked at the ratio of the gears and came of with about 3.5 turns of the crown to equal one revolution of the main spring so it’s about the same. So a finger/thumb wind about equals one revolution of the crown. Does that answer your question?
Hans, by the way, had good advice in his earlier reply. He said to give a fully unwound watch 10 to 15 winds. That would place it in the middle of its fully wound state.

Putting this discussion thread back up front. I thinks this is the one I was looking for.
