C63 Sealander GMT Hand
C63 Sealander GMT Hand
Hi everyone,
So my January Sale (nearly new) purchase arrived yesterday and I've finally got round to unboxing this beautiful C63 Sealander GMT (hunter green dial), wow beautiful watch! Having set the time, date and GMT hand, it feels like the GMT hand isn't keeping good time.
I've just reset the time at 2pm UK time and the GMT hand 8am, it's now approaching 2:30pm and the GMT hand has only moved one increment but I'd expect it to be halfway between the 8 and 9 hour.
I've followed the instructions when setting the time, but not sure if I'm missing a step or something out?

Re: C63 Sealander GMT Hand
You have to read the GMT hand against the numbers on the bezel. When you set the watch at 2pm, you set the GMT hand to 16.00 hours (the 16 on the bezel, not the 8 on the dial). It now correctly reads as 16.30 hours given that the main time is 2.30pm.
The watch seems fine, it's just that you are not reading the GMT time correctly.

Another point is that the GMT hand only travels around the dial once every 24 hours, compared to the regular hour hand which travels around the dial twice every 24 hours.

Ahhh! Now it all makes sense! Can you tell it's my first GMT watch?

Re: C63 Sealander GMT Hand
Wouldn't half way between the 8 (16 on the bezel) and 9 (18 on the bezel) be after a time lapse of 1 hour not 30mins?
Or am I mis-understanding?
EDIT - others beat me to it.

My first ever Rolex was also my first ever GMT and I went back to the AD a day later complaining that the watch wasn't working properly.

Looks fine and, as others have said, the GMT hand only goes round the dial once in 24 hours; half the speed of the hour hand.
Nice watch and neat acquisition.

@Czechia Here is a pretty good overview of how GMTs work and the two different types that are available. Note that the C63 is a 'caller' or office type GMT.

Re: C63 Sealander GMT Hand
The GMT is essentially a 24 hour hand rotating within a 12 hour dial, hence the external 24-hour bezel. It completes one full rotation every 24 hours, and is therefore locked into a 2:1 orbital cycle with the hour hand. Each minute marker on the chapter ring indicates 24 minutes on the GMT hand. Let’s assume that the GMT is showing 0600 (irrespective of the time on the watch hands). The orange hand will be pointing directly at 3 o’clock, and over the next two hours should point to the consecutive minute markers at the following times: 0624; 0648; 0712; 0736.
Yours looks pretty spot-on.

Thank you sir! Yes, it's a beautiful watch. The slight distressed dial in Hunter Green really pops! Love it.MomentsNotice wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 4:29 pmWelcome to the GMT club. There is something I find really satisfying watching the GMT hand move along the dial over the course of a day.
The GMT hand is really cool too, I don't feel so bad when I get emails from my boss at 10pm and realize it's only 4pm where he is!
