C63 ELITE case back screwed or screws?

Post by tikkathree »

The C63 Sealander Elite - and presumably similar C63 models - is the titanium case back screwed down in the normal manner or is it held down by six threaded bolts with torx heads as can be seen in the archive page photo?

Image

The manual is ambiguous "screw-down display caseback" which to me could be either method. Stated WR is 150M which seems generous for a caseback with six screws.

If the torx heads are more than decorative does anyone know what size torx screwdriver is required please?

Torx T5 felt like a good fit when I just tried it. I must stress i did not actually loosen anything, but the screwdriver head was a solid fit.

I seem to remember Mike France explaining that it was a case back with screws to get it down to 10.7mm. The regular Sealander is 11.25mm. It could have also been the crown mechanism. I can't remember exactly but I remember him giving a reason there were screws on the case back during the forum preview.

I don't think that the method of screw down makes a difference with water resistance other than all of the screws need to be torqued to the same value so that there are no gaps.

^^^^ Elliot Brown use a bolt down method of securing the caseback on all their watches, which are rated at 200m / 20ATM.

Remember that the bolts don't need to be that tight as the water pressure will compress the caseback onto the case. :wink: :wink:

@rkovars and @Bahnstormer_vRS thank you.
I was coming from the direction of bolted heads, certainly in the CW range, being used in the cases with limited WR, the non-divers with 3-5ATM and I lay my hands on C4 Peregrine, C3 Malvern Chrono and C30 Chrono, C1 Moonphase and the C9.

^^^^ but, of course, those models are not ones that you'd expect Dive suitable WR ratings, are they Pete? :wink: :wink:

Precisely. Watches which lack dive suitable WR tend, as an identifying feature, to have 'ickle screws. :lol: :lol:

My torx kit doesn't go small enough, I've ordered smaller and will report back. :thumbup:

Small stash of small to very small tory bits having arrived I can confirm that this case back IS torx bolted down. I'm not minded to whip the back off today but here's proof.
Oh don't go mad buying a torque wrench tory driver, these little guys are finger tight only.
