C60 Concept isn't all blissful happiness....

Post by tikkathree »

I've got two problems with my C60 Concept. That is to say, I've got two problems but I'm not sure that the watch has any problems!

1. Unless I'm doing something likely to cause direct contact with something metallic and scratchy, I don't want to wear any of my other watches: just the Concept. Oh dear. Daily rotation is out!

2. Being unused to skeletal watches I don't know exactly what I'm looking at and specifically, why do I never see any rotation in the lower barrel, the one behind 8?

I see rotation in the spring housing and I see movement in the spring in the barrel behind 12.

Only slightly flippantly, shouldn't there be an owner's guide to what's going on in there? If I didn't wear the watch very often this would be much less of a problem obviously but every day I look and I wonder.....

Good point about the explanation about the watch mechanism.
Good point also about the twin barrels

Maybe the one at 8 is the reserve engine. Leave it off for 3 days, so barrel one runs down, and barrel two might start running.

I’m concerned about your mental state caused by this watch. I’ll PM you my address so you can send it here while you heal from the trauma!

I see rotation in the spring housing and I see movement in the spring in the barrel behind 12.
The dual barrel springs are what store the energy which gives the movement a 5 day power reserve, and I believe they operate in a sequential manner. So I'd guess that the lower barrel spring stores energy for the final half of the power reserve and that since you're wearing the watch regularly you're never tapping into the last half of the reserve. I'm no watchmaker but that seems like a logical explanation, just hope I'm correct! 8)

If you manually wind the movement, you will see the top barrel (at 12 o'clock) rotate and then every few rotations, there will be a click and the bottom barrel (at 8 o'clock) will wind too. Whilst you might not se the barrel rotate, the spring certainly tightens

Clickbait?
Clickbait?
How would I know what clickbait is? It's not like I get my "televisual entertainment" from the internet and specifically youtube

But in answer

Let's have a look, first thing by dawn's early light......YES! I wound the watch on the stem, about 20 of those "thumb and forefinger in both directions" winds and after about 22 anticlockwise movements of the upper barrel I saw the spring in the lower barrel start to tighten and ten stem winds further on the same is happening.

You guys are all great, thank you.

But wait a minute there.... doesn't this suggest that wear in the upper barrel will be greater than in the lower barrel? (Now that's clickbait!   )
