I found this picture Russ of a crown attached to the stem. Definitely threaded.
And this one looks to have a lock nut.
Daz,
Great pic! This must be the answer. It may be just loose threads. I'll be it is lock tight or similar produce to seal the crown on the threads. I'll call Larry, my good watch making friend.
I just compared the shaft on m my C5 to that of my sinn 556 and it much thinner with more play compared to the sinn which is rock solid both eta 2824s but different set ups in the shaft of the winder, I'm no wiser sorry folks

Leebman,
Hmmmmmm….. that’s a very curious find. What eludes me about mine is why doesn’t the crown just thread off the shaft if it’s so loose at the threads to easily wobble? Or… when setting the hands when turning the crown counter clockwise? I wonder if your Sinn 556 might have a higher grade 2824? If so, perhaps it is due to the higher grade? We have much to learn. I’m going to pull out my crown one more time and see if it feels like I can thread it on the shaft without any winding taking place. I’ll report what I find, if anything.
Well, I tried to un-thread the crown and I couldn’t. There’s a definite wobble and it’s not the shaft being too small for the hole, something I just thought of. Something is holding it on and I’m not convinced its threads alone.

My understanding is that Sinn use the Elabore grade of movement, certainly in the 556 and 656.
