C1 Bel Canto ‘scratchy’ noise when winding

I have been lucky enough to receive my C1 Bel Canto and am more than happy with it.

I have however noticed that when manually winding the watch the forward rotation of the crown is quite stiff and noisy (scratchy) whereas the reverse rotation smooth and quiet.

Before I contact CW I just wondered if anyone else has ‘a stiff crown’.

Lol. No I have had a few over the years.

Daily is a Seiko 5 GMT SSK003K1 which has a much lighter crown ‘feel’ and I have a Submariner which has a lot more ‘resistance’ than the seiko but is a lot smoother and quieter than the Bel Canto.

On the Bel Canto the ‘scratch’ noise drowns out the ‘click’ from the ratchet wheel when winding. Very different to my othe r watches.

If possible I’d take a video or recording of the sound. I myself am not a watch technical expert, but I’m sure there are some smart people around here they could tell you of the noise is normal or not!

I have just listened to the clip and it does sound rougher than mine.

Different types of movement will sound different when wound. As well as the Bel Canto I have just put an extra few winds on the other three watches that I currently have wound and set (none fully powered to the point when the clutch slips).

C63 Sealander GMT - very smooth and negligible resistance. This does seem to be a feature of the movement.

Milgauss - very smooth with slightly more resistance. Same/similar movement to the submariner (unless the submariner is the current version).

Seamaster 300 Heritage - still very smooth, but more resistance than the Milgauss.

That doesn't sound too far from the noise mine makes, but perhaps a tiny bit more "rough"

Just checking my other SW200 movement based watches... the C65 Cranwell is barely audible when wound, but the C65 Super Compressor sounds very much like my Bel Canto, just a bit quiter.

In all cases, the movement is smooth.

Bear in mind that the Bel Canto case is specifically designed to amplify the chime noise, and so it might also do the same for the movement winding sound.

Either way, I'd send the video clip and description to CW and let them confirm one way or the other... good luck
