It can be argued that a power reserve on an automatic watch is a useless complication, and perhaps a day, date complication is questionable - date, fine, but if you don't know what day it is then there are more issues than telling the time.

A chiming watch is a valid complication if you look at the history of timekeeping. But that's neither here nor there - CW made a watch that has pretty much been universally lauded by review sites, and what's more all 600 were sold in two days for a price that those buyers (and many others who missed out) were more than prepared to pay.

I didn't get one because I do not like the aesthetic - nothing to do with how clever or otherwise the movement is but purely on the look. The movement though was heavily customised with I believe 50 brand new, not off the shelf, in-house designed parts. I'm really not sure what your angst is?

ā€˜You can get a lot of watch for 5k these days.’
Older Speedy, use Lemania movements bought in.
Seamaster, use ETA 2892 bought in
anything from the BB line (early version), used ETA 2824 bought in
BB Chrono, use Breitling bought in
Tudor Chrono use valjoux bought in

Sorry a bit lost on this. What was your point?

I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crashing in a blazing fall

You’re out of touch mate.

Speedy with a 1863 movement can be had at this price

Current Seamaster for maybe a few hundred dollars more

BB58, BB Pro, Ranger are the same.

I’m talking about current watches.

Again if this is how you want to rinse 5k go nuts, but you are going to take a bath if you ever decide to sell it. At this rate CW will have realised several more limited runs in the next few months. With a steel variant for 60% of the price not far away either.

My man original point, if I spent 5k on a limited run watch, for then 2 days later supply to literally double. I’d feel like someone was taking the ****. If you like being gouged go nuts.

You’re out of touch mate.

Speedy with a 1863 movement can be had at this price. The 1861 derived from 861 designed and made by lemania

Current Seamaster , yes 'in house'

BB58, BB Pro, Ranger are the same. Movements made by Kenissi.ch

I’m talking about current watches. See list below many other examples available

TAG calibre 5 is either ETA 2824 or SW200
Breitling calibre B17 is an ETA 2824
All Tudor T series movements are ETA or Sellita

I personally buy watches for enjoyment not as an investment. If I make loss so be it. If you want investments go to the stock market and buy yourself Casio.

Think about the Omega limited edition numbers as well. 7007 on how many Bond editions?, 6969 on how many moonwatch editions? and 15,000 plus on FOIS. The Tudor Pelagos LHD is at 15,000 and the FXD is unlimited production.

So even if CW make 5 batches of 300 does really compare with others 'limited edition ' ?

ā€œUseless Complicationā€. Sounds like a subjective term. And, what was I saying about fine art? I am sure that there have been those down through the ages that considered it useless & a waste of money.

Doesn't it also come back to the CW business model? Andrew (I now understand is his name) on Watchfinder indicated the sheer cost of developing any new watch movement like this. Even without the 3x cost model a short run of 300 watches can hardly have covered the entire development cost, so it's clearly not quite as straightforward as a simply 3x cost.

I have no idea how many of these will be sold, and how many CW need to sell. I think it's just better for all of us that CW becomes a consistently more profitable business, and this watch will help that process. Nobody questions that Rolex make a profit when they sell a watch. I'll leave it at that. :D

I'm enjoying listening to the lengthy Sunday casual at the moment.
I've just got to 50 minutes, and they are now talking about the Moonglow. I must say, I think the moonglow is one of the most attractive of the higher priced CW watches.

Key word being derived, it is still made by Omega.

Tudor owns Kenissi, so that argument is bust.

I’ve already **** of IWC and Bell and Ross, Breitling and Tag (less so due to their price) are in the same boat.

There is just no valid argument for charging 5k for a watch with a $400 basic ass movement, sure they slap on the bell but that doesn’t constitute the other $4600. I mean it’s not even COSC.

If you want a Selita/ ETA movement for serviceability that’s fine, but let’s not try to sugar coat it. At 5k I think we can agree something a little more than SW200 is warranted.

Just because your feelings are hurt doesn’t mean I’m wrong though.

Hi mileyCyrus
You have the conviction of a desert father and the same need to spread your faith. This conversation sounds like it’s you against the rest of the ignorant hoards who blindly refuse to see your truth.

Your opinion is fine. ā€˜Sure they slap on the bell’ says to me you’re dismissive of the skill it took to create this watch, but that opinion is fine too.

Trying to press the point that none of us ā€˜get it’ is more problematic. I can’t speak for anyone else of course, but:

I have ā€˜plenty’ knowledge and experience. And I wasn’t conned by this watch - I was captivated

I currently have the eclipse of the moon outside my living room window. A wondrous thing, last time we'll see it until 2025.
It is not a practical thing, there is no specification for it, it has no resale value.

If there is wonder in our hearts, it is a fine moment.
If there is not, it means nought.

There is wonder and passion in a Bel Canto.
There is a place, a good one, for chronometer spec and power reserve, but there is more to life.

^^^ These last 2 posts by Chris and Lindsey are both beautifully written. Thanks to you both!

MileyCyrus... here is a sonnerie au passage watch with an in-house COSC movement and a 65 hour power reserve: https://www.chopard.com/en-us/watch/161949-5001.html

$65,000.00 USD

What CW did with this watch, with this movement modified with this complication in this manner, at this price point, is an absolute marvel. It's OK to not want it or like it. But to reduce the years of R&D and engineering needed to do this to "slap a bell on it" is not an opinion, it's a gross mischaracterization.

C1 Bel Canto (Green)

Post by MileyCyrus »

Interested to hear peoples thoughts who so adamantly defended this watch and the decision to bring out a new colour (green) soo quickly.

Now we have another 4 colours (open serial too) and it’s been what, 2-3 months since the initial release.

Again, do what you want with your money, if you love the watch, great.

I’m not for releasing a ā€œlimited editionā€ watch in a total of 6 colour ways in such a short period of time.

Feel free to flame me though.

Hasn't this already been adequately discussed in the New Bel Canto Color Options for 2023 thread?

For the record, as the owner of a Bel Canto LE in Azzuro Blue it's not an issue for me.
