Broken GMT - Any thoughts?

Post by mvlow »

I went to wind and set my CW GMT that I purchased in 2018 and when I wind it the watch will not start. The second hand does not move at all. If I give it the Seiko shake the second hand will bounce back and forth for a few seconds and then stop.

It is six years old and out of warranty so I will be sending it to a local watch repairer here in the USA rather than shipping it back to CW. I was just wondering before I make arrangements for the repair if any of the watch gurus here know what is wrong with it. It has not been dropped or damaged in any way and the last time I wore it about two weeks ago it was keeping good time. Just curious.

I tried to upload a quick video of the issue but my old brain has forgotten how to upload videos here.

Ouch. Doesn't sound good. Although, being a 2893 it shouldn't be too hard to fix. I don't know. Off the top of my head I would say main spring or possibly something got down into the balance/pallet fork area. In any event keep us posted on how this one is resolved.

I figured that because it is out of warranty and a generic Swiss movement I may as well ship it somewhere here in the USA for repair. I don't see much point in paying international shipping to the UK for CW to repair it. At a certain point I have to decide if it's worth the cost to repair. I'm looking for somewhere close to me in Oregon that will repair it, but so far not finding much around here. Google is my friend :)

^^^^ @mvlow

It's worth remembering Malcolm that, should you ask CW to action the repair / service, CW covers the cost of shipping both ways, be you in the UK or anywhere else in the world i.e. the USA.

I’ve had a similar issue with this model that is currently with CW for some TLC. Cost of the repair is covered within a service and is a very reasonable £176 (which would probably work out at around £145 for you (as you wouldn’t pay the VAT on the service).

That's good to know Guy. I didn't think CW would pay for shipping because it is out of warranty.

That's pretty reasonable especially if they also pay for shipping as Guy has said.

^^^^ CW pays shipping for all repairs, regardless.

I'm currently waiting for two Returns Packs for old quartz models that just need a battery.

@mvlow I used Nesbit’s in Seattle years back when I travelled there monthly. They were very good.
