Best way to start a collection
Re: Best way to start a collection
That's good to know - takes the pressure off a bit!ajax87 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 6:23 pm I'll echo that just buying what speaks to you and enjoying the watches is the way to go! From your initial post, you've identified a few that you really like, so go for them.
I will say as a Moonglow owner that it can dress down really well too with rubber/canvas/nylon straps. Much of the time I actually treat it as a sports watch rather than a dress watch.
I'm not aware of any plan to stop production of the sealander elite or the moonglow, but you never know. There's always the pre-owned route.
Question on the Moonglow - do you need to store it on a watch winder to keep the moon phase correct when not being worn? That might be a really daft newbie question, but I assume it would be difficult to set the moon phase yourself if the watch is left wound down for an extended period?

I don’t have any sound advice, the only thing I know for sure is whatever you decide to it will change time and time again. Enjoy your journey and buy what you like not what other people say/Internet influences/the in thing is

Re: Best way to start a collection
Its easy really, buy a watch you like and fits your (this bits important): size, lifestyle, budget, wear it and enjoy.
Spot something else that catches your eye, buy, wear, enjoy and repeat.
Then you suddenly find you have 8 in your watch box (the next purchase) and you wander how that happened.
Then you think about rationalising etc. and so it goes on

It's easy enough to set it to full or no moon but anywhere in the middle is hard to guess accurately so a winder is a good idea, the other option being to wind it through every day you don't wear it which I can say from experience is not much fun.AJelley wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 6:40 pmQuestion on the Moonglow - do you need to store it on a watch winder to keep the moon phase correct when not being worn? ^^^ what he said. I’ve always kept my moonglow on a winder. It would be a whole thing to set the moon phase properly every time you want to wear it.

Welcome. Like some others, I need (or like?) variety too. This last statement of yours suggests a daily wear might force the others out of circulation in all but the most special occasions. That would be a shame, especially if you have something like a Bel Canto sitting idle for several hundred days a year…
Don’t be afraid to wear any of your watches. If you feel yourself going in that direction ever, you may wish to reconsider your buying decision.
My philosophy is wear, (be careful) and enjoy.

Brilliant advice all - thank you for taking the time! (pun absolutely intended). I'll be striving to a) only buy watches that I love, and b) wearing them carefully but often!
A few mentions of watch size in there, and the need to go try some on to get an idea of what suits... I'm guessing big watches look daft on little wrists and vice versa?

I'm currently at 18 CWs in my collection, I was at about 22 or 23 at one stage.
It is very additive, either way ENJOY your watch journey

Some practicals though, if you are a svelte person, large watches will feel heavy. Too much weight imbalance may be uncomfortable and in extreme cases may cover your entire wrist.
The biggest consideration though is do you like them big & heavy, or not? I do. I wear 42-45mm on a wrist just under 7 inches / 17 cm, but I do tend to stay at the bottom of that range. I tend to find 40mm and below a little small for my taste. Try a couple of oversized/ undersized on, and work out what you like.

Re: Best way to start a collection
^^^ Whereas I have a 7.25” wrist and don’t really like watches over 40mm (except my Speedy). And the great thing is that neither of us is wrong.
Anyway, I normally leave this to other people but it might be a good moment to dust off an old topic of mine.
