You are making an assumption that Royals have good fashion sense.
Historically, purple was used as a fabric dye because it was the most expensive to make. Gold was used because, as a precious metal, it is expensive. These colors were used as displays of wealth but not necessarily indicating any fashion/style sense of the wearer.

Historically I think the common folk were forbidden the wearing of certain posh colours. Brown was a common colour though. I think that's possibly why they hated Robin Hood so much, breaking the colour rules.
