Are blue and blue the same?

Post by tikkathree »

When I took delivery of my 316L LE from Ward hoard last week I was away from home and intrigued to see how the blue dial colour would compare to that of the C60 ACAN: would it be lighter? darker? the same?

What do you think?

I think this is one of those optical illusions. Because one bezel is black and one silver it fools the eye. In fact both dials are the same colour - orange

Cunning indeed Moriarty! I had already resolved to take new photos tomorrow and crop off any background, the bezels and maybe even set both sets of hands to 3.15 to minimise any effct from the date and day/date windows.

Interesting effect. I have my eye on the blue Trident Pro 300 and now see this. The stars are aligning!

The dials look the same to me, but I prefer the silver bezel I think.

Trying to ignore the optical illusion generated by the different bezel finishes, I'll advocate the Acan is a couple of shades darker than the 316L.

Model photos from the CW Archive

I know the website renderings we use in the Archive are not always the most accurate, but the Acan does look darker to me.

I would also be as bold to say that the Acan is marginally darker.

On my desktop machine where the images are nice and large, not only does the black bezel'd version have a darker looking blue dial, but the texture is also smoother. Both images seem to have been heavily post-processed to enhance appearance, so the saturation may have been adjusted differently enough to create the difference.

Comparing samples of the dials from your image in Photoshop, I think they're essentially identical. There's a light-ish reflection on the crystal of the steel-bezel one that throws off the eye, I think, and from the shadows one can see it's closer to the light source; there's very little to separate them that I don't think can be explained by the light source aspect and optical distractions such as the bezel colour and the reflection. Perhaps a vertical shot in the same place with the light source at 3 o'clock and the dials one above the other?

I don't trust the website renders at all!

I think it's an optical illusion. I think the bracelets look slightly different in the two images, and that causes the apparent difference in the dials.

I would be very surprised if this is anything other than a different bezel in the same watch.

I'm not sure how you would prove that though.

Having said that the dials aren't the same as the date cut offs are different, so the dials are probably from different batches, and maybe there was an unintentional but slight difference in the paint mixture on the two occasions.
