Outside of CW, and assuming you don't want to break the bank......how about a Mondaine? You can get quartz or auto, white face or black face...they are a public transport design classic and very legible.
If you can read this you are too close to your computer screen....

Thanks for all the suggestion there lads, I'm wondering if he would prefer a quartz to an auto, as he may find it a faff setting it if he only wears it at weekend. I'll have a look at all the watches you've suggested, but I did look at the Mondaine and it does look interesting.

+1 for the C5A. It's my 5th CW - I'd always avoided it until the latest NN sale cos I thought it would be a bit small. But it's become my new fav CWL. I have the cream dial - it's legible, detailed and classy - good as a dress watch, something for work or the weekend. A real all rounder. And it's not that small at all. I would be thrilled to receive this watch as a gift.

What about a C2 or C20? no offence to anyone that owns one but I always think of them as an older persons watch. I think its an awesome looking watch and a good price but as I said I think suited for an older person. But if not yep also think the C5 is also a great choice.

C5 is a nice watch just not for everyone. As is every other watch.

Don't worry what others think. It's what you think.

I just got the C4BBMF and I know I'm going to get a lot of questions. Such as, "You weren't apart of the Memorial Flight were you?" Why are you wearing a British encrusted watch, because your wife is British? etc... etc...

I don't care I think it looks great.

It sounds to me like your old work mate is NOT a collector so he may be happy with his SEKONDA, but i would say a C5 on leather is a very good choice, or as i got my dad last xmas (before i really got into auto,s) was a nice classic Rotary....
such as this 1 ok its used but new they are around £50.....Link to ebay.

My dad has always worn an Rotary and he loved it.
And its the thought that counts NOT how much it was.
Whichever you decide on, Im sure he will love it. :D

If you want a CWL watch for him Lamppo then I agree with the others re the C5 Aviator. If he is into Bikes and Steam Engines then the standard C5 sounds like it will be a bit too dressy for him. I would think he would prefer a steel finish rather than gold and the dial & hands on the C5A will probably suit him better too. Auto will also presumably be better because if he likes Bikes and Steam Engines then he will probably also appreciate a mechanical. Yes the C5 Aviator sounds like the one and if your quick you can still get a discount before they are all sold.
